Kit Review

Cybaster has been released as the first non-scale kit in the Super Robot Wars series. (It's Cybaster, not Cybuster) In the lore it's a giant robot standing over 28 meters tall, and rather than releasing it at 1/144 scale — which would've been a stretch — they just made it a non-scale kit roughly the same size as other 1/144 kits.
First off, the style is pretty unique — the head, the wings, the feet — everything has a bird-like look to it. (Specifically a chicken..) It's got that chicken-head, chicken-feet design, and that's because in the original lore it can transform into the bird-form Cybird Mode shown below.
Of course, being a Kotobukiya kit, that complex-looking transformation feature isn't implemented here.. it sticks strictly to robot mode.
As you can see, Cybaster has a pretty unique design, and probably its most distinctive feature is just how many pointy bits it has all over it. It might just be the kit with the most needle-sharp spikes of any plastic model ever made. Kotobukiya tends to mold their sharp parts genuinely sharp as an awl — they don't really think about overseas export and mostly make these for the domestic market — and while that does give the details a nice crisp edge.. it's a bit dangerous since you can easily stab yourself.
In that sense, this Cybaster is a genuinely dangerous kit -.-;; The pointy parts are practically at weapon level — I actually stabbed my finger and drew real blood (T_T) The problem is these sharp bits are scattered all over the body (especially under the shoulders;;), so you have to handle it very carefully. Normally you handle a kit gently to avoid damaging the parts, but with this one you need to be careful for your own hands' sake, and you should especially watch out for your eyes. This kit really makes you understand why some countries restrict the import of plastic models with sharp parts..
For a kit that's overall pretty voluminous and on the chunky side, the polycaps hold up reasonably well, which is a pleasant surprise. The one downside is that the ball joint polycap connecting the back wings to the body is weak and keeps popping out, but the body joints themselves are decent enough. The articulation isn't great so pulling off dynamic poses is a bit of a stretch, but the color separation is almost excessively well done, which somehow makes it forgivable. That said, as with other Kotobukiya kits, the fit is loose enough without glue that it can get pretty frustrating — so again, this is one I'd recommend gluing.
Cybaster is a pretty prominent main-character robot in the Super Robot Wars universe, and in terms of sculpt, color separation, and proportions, it's quite nice — as you'd expect from a Kotobukiya kit — so if Cybaster has a special place in your heart, this is one I can recommend without much hesitation. :-)
