The Gespenst Mk-II, which had quite a prominent role in the SRW anime, has been released as the 11th SRW kit. Following Cybuster and Alteisen, it's another big-bodied unit — line all three up side by side and they're all about the same size. It definitely feels more substantial than your typical 1/144.
Now... you might look at the somewhat hunched posture and silhouette and think "I've seen this somewhere before!" That's because the Gespenst's mecha designer is none other than Kunio Okawara. All sorts of different designers are involved in SRW mecha design — alongside Hajime Katoki, who leads the R-series and Hückebein series, the great original Gundam designer himself has also dipped his toes in like this.
First things first — with a big kit like this you need to check the durability, and the joint strength is pretty decent for a Kotobukiya kit. The articulation isn't great, but the joints are solid enough to hold action poses, and it stands on its own without any issues. It seems like after learning their lesson with Alteisen, the hip joints on these chunky-legged kits don't get loose as easily anymore. Of course, you'll still need to glue the main parts to prevent unnecessary limb separation — that hasn't changed.
The color separation on the small yellow and red accents scattered around the body is fairly well done, and thanks to that, even though the whole body is blue, it still has a nice little bit of visual variety to it.
Overall the kit quality is solidly "decent"... but it's also the kind of kit that somehow feels a bit bland once you're done building it. Setting aside personal taste on the unique design, there's just something... a little empty about it? If you're a fan of Kunio Okawara's work or have a thing for the Gespenst, it's definitely worth building — but for anyone who doesn't know the unit's background, it's hard to imagine them reaching for this one. ^^;
