Kotobukiya Super Robot War

S R X

Kit Review

Straight build

The giant combining transforming robot, S R X, has been released as a Super Robot Wars kit. Its official designation is SRX-00 Super Robot X-Type, and since it stands 51.2 meters tall in lore, it's been released as Non Scale. Size-wise, it's roughly a little smaller than a typical MG, though it's definitely bigger than 1/144. The SRX is originally a robot formed by a whole bunch of R-series units combining together, but of course this kit doesn't actually combine or transform. ^_^;

First off, this is a design that really shows off Katoki Hajime's insane color separation work — it's the kind of design that Kotobukiya probably couldn't wait to sink their teeth into. Thanks to that, even at this relatively small scale, the color separation is absolutely wild throughout the kit. That said, it doesn't quite nail 100% of the official colors, but regardless, this is hands-down one of the most complex parts breakdowns Kotobukiya has ever pulled off.

Since all the focus went into color separation, the articulation takes quite a hit — though honestly, this is the kind of kit where the display look matters more than posability anyway. With so many parts broken up, there are quite a few spots that don't hold together all that securely, so gluing down the loose parts is pretty much a must with this one. Also, probably because of the sheer part count, the kit is on the heavier side, which makes the joint strength feel a little iffy — though not so bad that it can't stand on its own.

If you're a fan of Katoki Hajime's designs, loved the SRX in Super Robot Wars, and want to enjoy a rich, colorful build straight from a straight build alone thanks to the extreme color separation work — this is a pretty great kit for you. In a way, it might be the kit that best captures Kotobukiya's whole philosophy. At the very least, if you want a kit that looks stunning even without any paint, this one is definitely not to be missed :-)
