Kotobukiya Super Robot War

Huckebein Mk-II

Kit Review

Straight build

Following Huckebein Unit 1 and Unit 3, the Mk-II (Unit 2) has finally been released.
The release order feels a bit all over the place — since the Huckebein Mk-II was previously released in 1/100 first, it ended up coming out in 1/144 even later than the Mk-III.

First off, this is a kit that successfully brings together Hajime Katoki's distinctive Huckebein design concept in a cohesive way, and the overall quality is on par with the Huckebein Mk-III.
Great proportions, surprisingly thorough color separation for the scale, and reasonably solid polycap joint strength — it's a solid Kotobukiya Super Robot Wars kit all around.

Of course, just like its predecessors, the slightly cheap-looking molded colors and the abundance of sharp parts can be a bit of a downside. It still has that issue where some parts need a dab of glue to feel secure. The hip joints popping out during more aggressive posing, and the backpack attachment being a little loose — even those quirks are similar to the Huckebein Mk-III. That said, it's a whole lot better than the early Super Robot Wars kits.

One thing though — having a rich weapon loadout is great, but the way the G Impact Cannon attaches is a bit of a mood-killer. ^^; It might not be a kit problem so much as a designer-mindset problem on Hajime Katoki's part... Most large weapons like this connect to the chest or stomach area, but on the Huckebein Mk-II, it plugs in very precisely at the groin. (And it even opens up the crotch panel neatly to do so.) Given the eccentric decaling we've seen in the Ver.Ka series, it's pretty clear this guy has some... unique tastes. ;

Anyway, it's one of the more solid Super Robot Wars kits out there, so it's definitely worth recommending to anyone who's a fan of Hajime Katoki's designs or the Huckebein series. And if you collect all three units together... it's absolutely killer. :-)
