Kotobukiya Super Robot War

Non-scale Grungust Type-0

Kit Review

Straight build

The Grungust series has now made its way into the Super Robot Wars lineup, and leading the charge is the Type-0. The design itself is so flashy that I honestly wondered if it could ever be made into a plastic model — but Kotobukiya pulled out all the stops with their color separation techniques and brought it to life in spectacular fashion.

This kit pushes Kotobukiya's ever-evolving color separation skills to just about their absolute limit — even tiny little details that Bandai would never bother separating are all broken out into individual parts. Of course, even Kotobukiya can't perfectly replicate 100% of the design colors... but even so, seeing the straight build in person is genuinely eye-popping. @_@ On top of that, the color combination — red, yellow, blue, green, white, black and other primaries — creates such a striking contrast that the sheer presence of this thing gives you a real thrill..

And probably in order to pull off all that fine color separation, this non-scale kit came out significantly larger than other Super Robot Wars kits. It's roughly the same height as a standard 1/100 Bandai MG, but with a much more voluminous build.

Articulation is about average, but the joint strength is actually pretty good for a Kotobukiya kit, so most poses hold up stably. I was especially worried about how well the large Booster unit on the back would stay in place... but once built, it holds just fine — nothing to stress over. And the fact that it can hold up the massive Zankantou without the shoulders or forearms giving out is a real plus!

If you love big kits and want to experience impressive color separation right out of the box with just a straight build, this might honestly be the best kit for that. Even if you're skeptical about Kotobukiya's quality, you can build this one without much worry — aside from the sheer number of parts to separate, it goes together with a feel similar to a Bandai kit. Of course, I'd still recommend gluing some parts for a more secure hold, but Kotobukiya's snap-fit has clearly come a long way... :-)

This is one of the rare Kotobukiya kits with (almost) nothing to complain about, and it's a great kit I'd highly recommend even to Kotobukiya newcomers. :-)
