Another unique robot has been added to Kotobukiya's Super Robot Wars series, which keeps putting out all kinds of distinctive mecha. That's the Valsione (a.k.a. "Val, so refreshing!"...) — a giant humanoid mech in armor — and from the looks of it, it's an injection kit that gives off a real figure-like vibe.
First off, the most distinctive feature — the humanoid head — uses virtually the same material and techniques as actual figures, and just like a pre-painted figure, you can swap between 2 different facial expressions. The body excluding the head is made of pure injection parts, and the feel of building it isn't all that different from your typical Kotobukiya kit.
Overall, the color separation on the body is quite well done, and a straight build gets you pretty close to the design specs, but it does seem to need a bit more gluing compared to other kits. There are quite a few parts that come apart with snap-fit alone, so this is a kit where I'd strongly recommend just gluing everything together from the start.
Joint strength is fine overall — stiff enough to be satisfying to handle — but the movable skirt pieces tend to pop off with leg movement, which is a bit of a concern. Articulation is decent enough, though in practice there don't seem to be all that many poses you can actually pull off. Then again, there aren't many Kotobukiya kits where you'd expect flashy posing to begin with, so... ^^;
Anyway, if you're after a unique plastic model, Valsione — with its combination of figure and injection parts — is worth recommending. It might feel a little off compared to Bandai, but among Kotobukiya kits, it seems like a relatively solid release. :-)
