Kotobukiya Super Robot War

Persön-Lichkeit

Kit Review

Straight build

Kotobukiya's Super Robot Wars series has been putting out one bizarre mech after another, and now Persön-Lichkeit has joined the lineup. As you can see, the design is extremely outlandish — at first glance, it's the kind of thing you'd never expect to get an injection-molded plastic kit. (Kotobukiya, you legends!)

First off, the strange design covered all over in skulls and bones is pulled off pretty well, and it even has a resin kit-like sense of volume. The various skull shapes on the back, shoulders, forearms, and knees are nicely put together with good parts breakdown that gives them a solid three-dimensional feel, and the torso section — where you can make out the ribs and heart — is well done too.

The clear support arms connecting the two large skulls on the back have a wider range of motion than you'd expect, and they hold their position quite firmly, so you can freely move the skulls around to different angles and positions without any stress. The overall articulation is about average, but most of the joints are solid, making it easy to pose and giving it a good sense of power. The one unavoidable downside is that the soles aren't flat.. so the footing feels a little unstable.

You get to choose between two face options, and the open-mouth version in particular is nicely painted and looks really convincing. Being a company with a long history of making figures, they're clearly strong when it comes to facial expression like this.

Anyway, this is a mech that's second to none when it comes to sheer uniqueness — though once you've built it and take a good long look, the design does give you a bit of a chill (;). In terms of basic quality it's an excellent kit, so if it catches your eye, I'd say go ahead and build it without worrying about quality. :-)
