The Gespenst Mk-II Mass Production Model Kwai — an upgraded version of the Gespenst Mk-II — has been released. There are actually quite a lot of Gespenst-lineage units in Super Robot Wars, and this kit carries on the design concept of the original Gespenst Mk-II while giving it a more refined and premium retouched look.
At first glance it might look a little similar to the Alteisen or Weissritter (especially the leg sections), but that's because in the lore, the Weissritter is classified as a Gespenst Mk-II Custom, and the Alteisen / Alteisen Riese fall under the Gespenst Mk-III — so it makes sense that they'd all look somewhat alike.
Anyway, probably because of that lineage, the design concept does share a lot in common with the previously released Gespenst — but in terms of quality, there's quite a significant gap between them. There's about a three-year difference in release dates, and this kit really shows just how much Kotobukiya's quality has leaped forward in that time.
The original Gespenst Mk-II, being an early kit, had mediocre articulation, slightly iffy joint strength, and some awkward color separation. The Gespenst Mk-II Mass Production Model Kwai has a far more complex and intricate design than the standard Gespenst Mk-II to begin with, but Kotobukiya has applied the latest techniques to pull off the color separation beautifully. The articulation and joint strength have also improved dramatically, making it hard to find anything to nitpick quality-wise.
Before release, I figured that since it's essentially an upgraded version of the Gespenst Mk-II, a good chunk of the parts and runners from the existing Gespenst kit would be reused... but after actually building it, there isn't a single reused part from the original Gespenst Mk-II. Technically, some parts could have been shared if you look closely — but our friends at Kotobukiya apparently decided to cut all-new molds across the board, perhaps to show off their improved engineering skills. ^^; (Truly generous!!)
If you built the original Gespenst and came away a little disappointed, please don't let that color your expectations for this kit. This is an entirely different beast — far more refined and complex, with noticeably superior quality. The design concept may be similar, but there was clearly a very good reason for this to come out as a completely new mold. :-)
