Kotobukiya Super Robot War

Ialdabaoth

Kit Review

Straight build

This kit is the Ialdabaoth from Super Robot Wars, and it has more of an eerie, unsettling atmosphere than a mechanical feel. Kind of in the same vein as the skull-adorned Pelzein Richkarte..

First off, this is a kit that really shows off Kotobukiya's signature flashy color separation — with plenty of pre-painted parts and detailed color separation, it looks stunning even as a straight build. The colors are vibrant and lively too, so setting aside the slightly creepy design, the coloring alone makes it quite a beautiful kit.

That said, despite its flashy appearance, there are a few structural shortcomings compared to more recent Kotobukiya kits. The shoulders, despite having double joints, barely move and pop off way too easily, and the side skirt joints — while a clever idea — also tend to come loose. And since there are no weapons, the range of poses you can pull off is pretty limited.. It feels less like an action figure and more like a kit whose value lies in just standing there looking good.

On the other hand, joint strength in areas other than the shoulders is pretty solid — it manages to stay balanced even with that massive ponytail attached. The ponytail itself can be spread out in multiple directions, and you can use the alternate parts to slightly (and I mean ever so slightly) adjust the fixed angle.

Anyway, aside from the chronic shoulder-popping issue, there's nothing majorly wrong with this kit, and it's still a Super Robot Wars kit worth recommending to anyone who wants something that looks great straight out of the box. :-)
