Just when you start to forget about it, another new Super Robot Wars kit shows up — this time it's the Soulgain from Super Robot Wars OG2. As you can see, it's more of a classic humanoid mech rather than a cutting-edge design, but since the official specs put it at over 40 meters tall, it comes out as a non-scale kit. That said, it's a big unit by design, so the kit itself is noticeably larger compared to other Super Robot Wars kits.

The assembly process is similar to your typical Super Robot Wars kit, but there are a noticeably large number of round clear parts. Most of them stay in place pretty well, but the pentagonal clear part on the palm and some of the round clear parts don't sit very securely — in those cases, I'd recommend fitting them in first and then wicking in some non-solvent cement to lock them down.

The proportions look great once it's finished, and the joint strength is solid, but the articulation isn't quite as good as you might hope, so pulling off really dynamic poses is a bit of a stretch with this kit. On the plus side, special effect parts are included for the Genbu Koudan action — where both fists launch like Mazinger missiles — and with the hefty soft parts plus the spiral add-ons, it looks pretty convincing. I was a little worried the shoulders might not hold up under the weight of those effect parts, but once I had them fitted between the forearms and set it up for display, they held their ground just fine. ^^

It looks like the color separation is pretty well done, as you'd expect from a Kotobukiya kit — but when you actually compare it against the official color scheme, there's a lot more complexity that the color separation misses. Still, the fact that a straight build already looks impressively colorful is very much a Kotobukiya thing, and overall this is a solid, no-frills Super Robot Wars kit. :-)
