Kotobukiya's SRW series is lucky to put out one kit a year, and the Galilnagant has arrived as what might be the only kit of 2015. The color scheme somehow reminds me of the Hückebein or the Bildvild, and with those massive wings it really gives off a big, powerful impression. (In the source material it's the one that smashes the Hückebein to pieces, but;;)
As befitting the 53rd SRW kit, the overall quality is pretty solid. The careful color separation, sturdy polycaps, and decent articulation make for a satisfying build experience. Snap-fit works well for the most part, but a few spots look like they'll need glue — especially the hip joints and thighs, which really should be glued down. If you just snap-fit those without gluing, there's a good chance the whole leg will come apart when you try to rotate the hip joint.
To really bring out the Galilnagant's looks, you'll want to apply the red stripe waterslide decals — but since I review Kotobukiya kits as straight builds for a few reasons, I thought about it briefly and went ahead with the review as-is. There are quite a lot of waterslide decals, so if you can, it's definitely worth doing them before displaying. Going a step further and painting it — or at the very least applying the decals and then top-coating — would make it look absolutely stunning.
The two biggest highlights of the Galilnagant are the massive Bustaxe Gun and the Active Wing unit. The Bustaxe Gun, which looks like a rifle and axe fused together, has a really cool style and looks incredibly powerful when posed. That said, it's heavy enough that holding it in one hand is tough — you really need to support it with both hands when posing. The massive Active Wing unit moves in three stages, and the lower section can also rotate, letting you position it at all sorts of angles. Joints on big wings like these can be a real problem if they're weak, but thankfully the joint strength here is solid, so it holds whatever position you put it in. As a bonus, you can detach the three blades from the wings and combine them with the extra parts to recreate the Tri Slasher configuration.
Thanks to the big weapons and wings, it looks great just standing there, and when you strike a pose it's an incredibly powerful-looking kit. Posing can be a bit tricky, but once you find the right stance and angle it holds well, which is a relief.
Personally, I'd recommend this kit more to people who plan to at least apply the decals or do a full paint job, rather than those going for a straight build. It's not that the straight build quality is bad — it's just that the Galilnagant really needs those red stripes running across it to look like the real deal. If you're a Super Robot Wars OG fan or have a grudge against the Hückebein (-_-), this is definitely a welcome addition. The value for money is still a bit questionable, but the SRW series has a charm all its own that sets it apart from Gunpla — it's a great lineup. :-)
