Kotobukiya Super Robot War

Non Scale Astranagant

Kit Review

Straight build

The Astranagant from Super Robot Wars, with its dark demonic appearance, has been released as a Kotobukiya plastic model. The design is reminiscent of the Griffon from Patlabor, though unlike Bandai's Ingram kit, the surface isn't finished with that smooth gloss injection treatment.

First off, the sharp yet grotesque design has been translated into 3D really well. In particular, the red stripe details scattered across the body are handled cleanly through color separation, so even a straight build reproduces the design colors nicely. Articulation is about average, but the joint strength is quite stiff, which means there's no looseness anywhere — and that's something I really appreciate. On top of that, stopper parts are thoughtfully included to hold the wings up in the raised position (see review photos), though since the wing joints are already stiff enough, they're not really necessary in practice.

The only weapon is the Z.O. Sword, but a dedicated hand part is included so you can pull off clean poses without any grip issues. Combine that with the multi-stage deployable wings and you can recreate some pretty dynamic action poses. Worth noting — there's also a limited Premium Edition of this kit priced ¥2,000 higher, which adds wing effect parts and various additional accessories.

The assembly process is a bit of a workout as you'd expect from a Kotobukiya kit, with some sections requiring glue, but the overall quality is solid. That said, the ¥7,800 price tag feels a bit steep for what you get. Kotobukiya kits tend to run a little pricey in general, but in terms of value for money, this one is honestly among the worst even by Kotobukiya standards. Just think about Gesterben [Dog] — a recent release at the same price that came with nearly twice the parts. When you open the box and see a large box that's mostly empty with tons of wasted space inside, the first thought that crosses your mind might well be "what a waste of money." T_T

It's a kit aimed at dedicated fans anyway, so those who want it will buy it regardless — and in terms of the finished look and overall build, it does deserve a positive evaluation. But if you're a true fan, I'd really recommend tracking down the Premium Edition limited release with all those extra accessories. :-)
