Kotobukiya Super Robot War

Non Scale Raftclans Aurun

Kit Review

Straight build

This kit is the Non Scale Raftclans Aurun released as part of Kotobukiya's Super Robot Wars series. It's the first new SRW kit in exactly a year, so it looks like they're planning to put one out every year or so. ^^;

Starting with the overall look, you can definitely feel the design concept carrying over from the early Hückebein lineage. The parts breakdown is among the most precise of any Kotobukiya kit, and the detail edges are nice and sharp, giving it a really impressive sculpt. The straight build looks great and the proportions are solid too — and on top of that it has relatively good articulation combined with sturdy joint strength, making it a high-quality kit that can hold its own against Bandai Gunpla.

That said, the assembly feel still has that characteristic Kotobukiya stiffness to it, though the snap-fit is well implemented so you can put it together without glue just fine. The joints in particular feel like a lot of care went into their strength — they're so solid they're almost stiff, honestly. Thanks to that, even if the movement isn't the smoothest, it's definitely better than having loose joints.

For weapons, you get the massive Orgone Sword/Rifle and a shield. The Orgone Sword/Rifle also comes with beam parts for the Orgo Night Busker Sword form and the Orgone Materialization mode. As for the shield, you can go through a somewhat tedious disassembly/reassembly process to recreate the Orgone Claw form with the claws spread wide open — though it does leave you wishing they could've made it work with a movable mechanism instead. On top of that, you can also swap out the chest parts to recreate the Orgone Cannon open state.

And while the joint strength is solid, holding up the large Orgone Sword/Rifle does push it to its limits a bit. Of course, there aren't many kits — whether from Kotobukiya or even Bandai — that can hold a weapon this heavy with one arm without any trouble. Looked at from that angle, the shoulder joint strength on this kit is actually pretty impressive by comparison.

All in all, this is easily one of the highest-quality SRW kits out there, and it really shows that Kotobukiya is continuing to grow. The ¥8,800 price tag is a bit of a hurdle, but for SRW fans or anyone who's into this kind of sleek mecha aesthetic, it's definitely a kit worth investing in. :-)
