Kit Review

Fei-Yen, the iconic female character of Virtual-On, has been released as the DNS side. Fei-Yen sports an incredibly feminine color scheme of white, pink, orange, and red, with a ponytail, heart-shaped hair pin, and a skirt around the waist — a textbook feminine mech design. As you'd expect from a Virtual-On mech designed by color variant master Katoki Hajime, she was a pretty popular character thanks to her flashy color separation and sharp design.
Hasegawa did release a Fei-Yen kit some time ago, but like all the Hasegawa Virtual-On kits, it was the kind of kit where you really had to go through a massive amount of decal work before the colors came to life. Kotobukiya's Fei-Yen, true to form with its trademark intricate color separation, looks quite clean even as a straight build — but it seems they hit their limits somewhere, as the smaller details on the shoulders and legs are handled with waterslide decals. That said, it's still pretty striking even without applying the decals.
Overall the parts count is low and efficient, making assembly easier compared to other Kotobukiya kits. Joint strength is very good across the board, and the articulation is solid enough that it's quite fun to pose and play with. The skirt, which you'd think would get in the way of articulation, actually moves around nicely on a ball joint, and the ponytail moves in two stages.
The slightly lacking color separation does leave you wanting a bit more, but given that it's a small kit, there were probably some inherent limitations — and that's understandable. The legs in particular are so slender that there must have been structural limits to separating out all those red sections individually. If you've always wanted to build a cute Fei-Yen but gave up because Hasegawa's waterslide decals felt too daunting, then the Kotobukiya Fei-Yen with its solid, no-fuss quality is definitely worth recommending. :-)
