Kotobukiya Xenoblade

: Non Scale Siren

Kit Review

Straight build

The Siren from the game <Xenoblade 2> has been released as a Kotobukiya plastic model kit. The Formula from Xenoblade X was previously released as a kit as well. The body itself isn't that large, but thanks to the flashy accessories, it comes in at an impressive volume of over 30cm.

Overall, the color separation and joint strength are solid. Articulation is a bit on the stiff side though — the front skirt in particular really limits the hip joint's range of motion. That said, the elaborate accessories give it a ton of presence even in simple poses, so it's still a pretty striking kit.

The main accessories that give this kit its volume are the four wings mounted on the front skirt and backpack, plus the ring on top. These parts are made of a PET material that looks like clear plastic sheet, and they come with a thin protective film to protect the printed surface. You need to peel this film off before attaching them to see the designs clearly — but the film sticks so well that it's hard to even tell it's there. Anyone who doesn't read the manual carefully will likely just attach the parts with the film still on, so it's worth keeping in mind that you need to peel it off first for the designs to really pop.

There aren't any separate weapons included, but you can swap between 4 different hand types. By swapping out the sub-arm that supports the binder, you can recreate the firing mode with the binders pointed forward. The included stand even has an extra support arm for this, so you can lock it into a pretty solid and convincing firing pose. Overall part fitment is decent, but the front skirt tends to pop off easily due to the way it's designed to move, so it kept falling off during posing, which got a little annoying.

All in all, the lavish accessories and impressive volume give it a really great visual presence. If you had a blast playing Xenoblade 2, this is definitely a kit worth checking out. The biggest hurdle is the very Kotobukiya-like price tag of ¥12,000, but since it's a pretty niche kit to begin with, whether you pick it up will probably come down to how big a fan you are. :-)
