Kotobukiya Yotsubato!

Yotsuba Koiwai

Kit Review

Straight build

This kit is a plastic model of Yotsuba Koiwai from Yotsuba&!. It originally came out back in 2013, but stock was so limited at the time that I could never get my hands on one — so here I am finally reviewing it in 2021. ^^

The basic lineup is your typical Kotobukiya-style character model kit. To capture Yotsuba's wide range of expressions, no fewer than 5 interchangeable face parts are included. On top of that, 2 blank faces for custom painting are also provided, so you can apply wet decals for the eyes. The four strands of hair at the back are also articulated, giving you a surprisingly good variety of expressive poses.

Hands are equally generous — you get 5 sets of standard hands plus hands holding a camera and a small bubble wand, for a total of 12. Accessories include a bag, a large bubble wand, a teddy bear, and a sitting waist part. Swapping out the entire lower body with the sitting waist part lets you pull off a natural seated pose, and the adorable little teddy bear — with its articulated head, arms, and legs — is honestly the highlight of this kit. That said, the body's overall articulation is a bit on the lacking side, so this feels more like a kit where the accessories and facial expressions do the heavy lifting rather than dynamic posing.

As a bonus feature, you can swap torsos with the separately sold Danbo kit for a crossover build — throw in the support parts and they combine together quite convincingly. Either way, if you're a fan of the original Yotsuba&! manga like me, this is a solid little character model kit that's well worth building. :-)
