Kit Review
Straight build
Straight build
Following the Red Horn and Dark Horn, the DPZ-10 Dark Horn Harry Special has now been released. There are quite a few changes from the original Dark Horn — the head antennae, the under-chin weapon, the side weapon section, the tail, and the addition of the large ultra-high-output beam launcher. On top of that, a good number of the body parts that were silver metallic have been changed to gold metallic, giving the kit an overall bigger presence and a more striking color scheme. Special is special, after all!
Even going from the Red Horn to the Dark Horn, the weapons were already pretty loaded up, but this Harry Special takes it even further — it feels like the ultimate in sheer volume. The parts count is genuinely massive, and with the color scheme changed to black and gold, the presence is unmistakable, so the satisfaction after all that long assembly is quite something. It's a big kit too. ^^
The overall characteristics of the kit are the same as the Red Horn/Dark Horn — the assembly feel is intricate and impressive, but the articulation is pretty lacking. The legs are short, the range of motion is narrow, the waist movement is minimal, and the neck is stiff ;; The tail section feels relatively flexible by comparison, at least. The waist joint popping out is still an issue too, so from an articulation and joint standpoint, it's a failing grade. But since the Dark Horn's appeal is its large, elaborate presence anyway, it looks plenty cool without even striking a pose.
Even among Zoids kits — already famous for their high parts counts — this one is absolutely top-tier. Just opening the big box and looking at the runners is satisfying in itself. ^^ If you want to enjoy a slow, leisurely build and then take in that hefty, striking design after the straight build, this is a kit worth recommending, and I think it's definitely got a bit more going for it than the normal Dark Horn. :-)
