Kotobukiya Zoid HMM

RZ-046 Shadow Fox

Kit Review

Straight build

After a long wait, Shadow Fox has arrived as a brand-new four-legged Zoid. Since the Liger Zero released two years ago, we've only been getting variation kits for quadruped Zoids, so a completely new mold like this is a real treat.

At first glance the silhouette looks similar to the Command Wolf line, but look closer and it's a completely different design from head to toe. That gives it a fresh and novel feel when building, and the matte-finish plated parts in gold and silver used throughout really look fantastic.

The articulation and joint strength are solid enough, but compared to other quadruped Zoids the waist has almost no left/right rotation. The legs do have a neat gimmick where you can pull the connecting joints outward to extend them and get a wider spread, but the stiff body means you can't really take full advantage of the articulation — which is a bit of a shame.

As for additional features, you get a cockpit hatch that opens and a tail that opens to reveal the built-in Electronic Net Gun, while the Laser Vulcan on the back can be repositioned and rotated to various angles. These extra weapon gimmicks definitely help make the action poses look more dynamic.

All in all, this was a fully brand-new Zoid I got to enjoy after quite a while, and it really reminded me — yeah, Zoids are all about four-legged walkers. The design is sleek, the gimmicks are solid... it's a clean new release that I'd happily recommend to any Zoid fan. :-)
