Kotobukiya Zoid HMM

RZ-049 Sturm Tyrann

Kit Review

Straight build

This is the RZ-049 Sturm Tyrann, the 45th release in Kotobukiya's Zoids HMM series. It's based on the previously released Berserk Führer with Sturm units added on top, and it comes in at a pretty steep ¥12,000. That said, you do get a ton of parts for the price.^^;

The base frame is the same as the Berserk Führer, so it's got that impressively large build with a detailed full-body mechanical frame. It comes packed with smooth articulation and a variety of deployment gimmicks. Visually, the head and leg armor have been bulked up to look bigger and more dramatic, and large new Sturm units have been added to the shoulders and backpack.

On top of the Berserk Führer's existing deployment gimmicks, the backpack's Sturm units also extend, and the Sturm Boosters added to the shoulders can be spread wide open using sub-arms. The large scissor-shaped X-Breakers stored inside the Sturm Boosters can be deployed as well — though when the Sturm Boosters are extended, the shoulders do tend to sag downward under the weight.

Trigger all these deployment gimmicks at once and you can pull off some seriously large and dramatic action poses. The added bulk also seems to have improved the joint strength a bit, so you can hold stable poses without much trouble.

Since this is based on the Berserk Führer — which was already considered a top-tier kit in its own right — the Sturm Tyrann delivers some of the best quality in the entire Zoids HMM lineup. The PG-level price tag will probably be the biggest hurdle for most people, but if you're a die-hard Zoids fan, this is definitely a kit worth investing in. :-)
