Kotobukiya Zoid Wild

Wild Liger

Kit Review

Straight build

This kit is the Wild Liger, released as No. 1 in Kotobukiya's Zoids Wild HMM series. It's the Zoid that appears in "Zoids Wild," the fifth official Zoids TV anime which aired in 2018. Like the Shield Liger, it's a four-legged mech, and it really stands out with its fresh, modern design and color combination.

The basic construction is similar to the existing HMM Liger-type kits, but as a new series it's been developed with 100% new tooling. Compared to previous HMM kits, the assembly feels a bit smoother, and the snap-fit connections feel noticeably more stable. The articulation of the head, waist, and legs hasn't changed dramatically, but you do get the ability to deploy the mane claws on the back and add effect parts to the head to recreate the Wild Blast state.

One of the defining features of the Zoids Wild series is that a figure that rides on top of the head is included. This kit comes with a soft-material pre-painted Arashi figure, and you can use two different head types — standard and flame — along with the Zoid Keys. That said, the figure doesn't attach all that securely on top of the neck, so it tends to fall off easily if you're not careful. Also, the stand mounting hole on the underside is sized to fit Kotobukiya's Flying Base Neo, which means it's unfortunately difficult to use with standard Kotobukiya stands or Bandai's Action Base.

On top of that, like previous kits, the Zoid Core can be detached, and there's a neat gimmick where the eyeballs rotate horizontally. If you remove the head armor and rotate the eyeball 180 degrees, it exposes the mounting hole on the back of the eye for the Wild Blast effect parts.

Overall the articulation isn't exceptional, but the joint strength is reasonably solid. It's easy to pose and holds its positions well, so it's genuinely fun to play around with. As a fresh new entry in the Zoids series, if you're looking to build a more evolved HMM Zoids kit or the style appeals to you, this is definitely worth picking up. :-)
