MG RX-78-2

Gundam : Titanium Finish Ver.

Kit Review

Straight build

This kit is the MG RX-78 v1.0 Titanium Finish Ver., one of the limited editions from Bandai's ClubMG event held in 2010. Being the very first MG kit ever, the First 1.0 does feel a bit old-school looking back at it 16 years later — but it's also a special kit that you can really feel the overflowing passion that went into it. ^^ And on top of that, it comes coated in Titanium Finish, Bandai's finest coating technique.

Before Titanium Finish was developed, it was apparently very difficult to achieve a white coating, so Gundams with white as their base color were all released only as silver metallic coating versions. The Titanium Finish coating on the First 1.0 is on par with the existing Unicorn/First 2.0 versions in terms of quality — it's got that gorgeous marble-like sheen flowing all over it. And the blue, yellow, and red plated parts (everything except the white) have the same glossy coating quality as before.

True to its old-school (?) nature, the MG First 1.0 had pretty poor articulation and weak joint strength — but with the thick Titanium Finish coating applied, at least the joint strength has improved significantly. The hand holding the shield and the elbow connection were particularly flimsy, but thanks to the tighter tolerances that come with a plated kit, they now hold together nice and firm.

Even for a 16-year-old kit... the Titanium Finish Ver. gives it an instant quality boost, and aside from being a little tricky (and complicated ;) to get your hands on, it's a memorable limited edition that's absolutely worth adding to your collection. :-)
