MG GAT-105

Launcher/Sword Strike Gundam

Kit Review

Straight build + panel lining + decals

Finally.. well, better late than never..
The MG Sword/Launcher Strike has been released. It came out way after the trend had passed, and lately it feels like Bandai has been cleaning up and releasing kits that should've come out ages ago. It took about 4 years and 6 months after the MG Aile Strike, but either way, this was a kit a lot of people were looking forward to.

First off, the base body is of course 100% identical to the existing MG Aile Strike. The decals are only slightly — and I mean very slightly — changed. As a result, the same weak ankle joints and ankle cover armor from before are just as weak here -_-;

What matters in this kit isn't the base body but the weapon packs, and my overall impression is "yep, MG is MG." As you can see in the 1/100 comparison photos above, it stays true to the MG concept of "slimmer and more refined."

Both the Sword and Launcher are noticeably longer than the 1/100 versions — which is consistent with how the Aile pack's wings got much longer too. It's not just a matter of length; the color separation is now perfect and the detail has improved enormously. Articulation gimmicks have been added in several places as well, showing off that MG-worthy quality.

The shoulder armor for both the Sword and Launcher packs is smaller and slimmer than the 1/100, and the detail is packed even inside the armor, making the build feel really satisfying. Aside from the yellow seals on the launcher shoulder pack's wing section, everything is nicely handled with color separation. The Gatling gun has also been properly redesigned from the solid one-piece shape of the 1/100 into something that actually looks like a Gatling, and the rotating drum magazine is far more refined as well.

One minor gripe — the lower wing section of the launcher pack's shoulder armor is a bit loose and tends to droop. It looks best angled slightly to the side, but it just hangs down loosely.. A little joint strength correction seems to be in order.

The standout part of this Sword/Launcher pack has to be the launcher unit itself. When building it, you'll be surprised by the sheer number of parts — about two runners' worth — but once it's assembled, you might wonder where all those parts went, which oddly reminds me of a Kotobukiya kit.. (-.-;) Of course, all those parts do result in a level of depth and dimension that's miles ahead of the 1/100. It's just oozing cool factor.

Since the Strike Gundam base body was already a kit with excellent articulation, the action poses with the Sword and Launcher attached show a level of dynamism and naturalness that's on a completely different level from the 1/100. That said, with weak ankles and large weapons, a stand is pretty much essential — and instead of the launch pad stand from the Aile Strike, this kit includes the tall slim stand that came with the MG Wing Zero (also included in the SEED limited edition). Action bases are pretty standard these days so it's not a huge deal, but it's still better than nothing..

It does feel like it came out late, but as expected, the kit itself is very clean and well done. The three-pack of Aile, Sword, and Launcher weapon packs is finally complete, and honestly, a lot of people probably thought the Sword and Launcher looked cooler than the Aile, so this should sell pretty well as a variation. Either way, since the newly added weapon packs are nearly flawless, if you were a fan of the Sword/Launcher, this is definitely a must-buy with no regrets ^^

Molding Color / Color Separation★★★★★Molded colors are excellent. Very MG-like color separation.
