MG RX-78-2

Gundam ~ Clear Color version

Kit Review

Straight build

Released as a 2009 Gunpla Expo exclusive, this was the first limited edition release of the Gundam RX-78 v2.0, done up as a clear color version. The basic composition is the same as the existing clear color version, with the internal frame in a slightly metallic color scheme, and the white outer armor done in a smoked semi-transparent clear finish.

Since the basic kit structure and characteristics are identical to the normal v2.0, it boasts some pretty impressive gimmicks and detail — but it does have a characteristic that sets it apart from other clear versions. That would be the fact that, as a clear version of a 2.0 kit with a full-body frame applied throughout, the dark frame of the entire body shows right through the clear armor.

This becomes even more apparent when you compare it to the clear version of the First v1.0 that came out over ten years ago. Unlike the 1.0 clear version, which had almost no internal frame and gave a genuinely "transparent" feel, the 2.0 clear version has almost no sense of transparency — if anything, it gives off a rather dark impression.

In a way, the overall color is so dark and murky that calling it "clear" almost seems like a stretch... but when you get up close and take in the full-body mechanical frame showing through the armor, it's actually pretty impressive. ^^; On top of that, as befitting a clear version of a modern kit, the dense molds and detail on the inner surface of the armor are all visible, giving it a really intricate and complex look. Thanks to this combined effect of the full-body frame and the outer armor molds, it feels like the clear armor is being put to better use here than in just about any other clear version out there.

All in all, this kit feels like the 2.0 wave has made its way into the limited clear version lineup as well, showing off characteristics that set it apart from previous clear versions. It's a bit of a shame it wasn't given a proper domestic release — that would've made it even more meaningful. :-)
