MG RX-78-2

Gundam v2.0 : Mechanical Clear Ver.

Kit Review

Straight build
+ decals

This kit is the Mechanical Clear version MG RX-78 Gundam v2.0, released as a pro shop exclusive. Just like the VF-25 Valkyrie Alto custom, the internal frame is molded in metallic colors while the armor is made from fully transparent plastic, letting you see right through to the frame inside. On top of that, waterslide decals are applied to the inner frame to make the internals pop even more.

To begin with, the First 2.0's internal frame is already incredibly dense and well-crafted, so the frame visible through the clear armor looks absolutely stunning. The decals for the inner frame are far more numerous and complex than those on the Alto custom, making them significantly harder to apply. There are many areas that are more difficult than the Alto custom Mechanical Clear, and it's nearly impossible to work without tweezers and Mark Softer. I'd strongly recommend using Mark Softer and Mark Setter together as needed — the surfaces are so curved and stepped, and the areas you need to apply to are so small, that you really have no choice.. At the very minimum, don't even think about attempting this without Mark Softer.

The waterslide decals are so tiny that applying just the inner frame ones took around 8 hours spread across multiple sessions — but once they're all on, it's definitely worth it. ^^; There's also a whole extra set of decals for the exterior armor included, but since those are basically optional, I skipped them. Managing the exterior surface is a pain, and applying them is brutal too T_T

The good news is that, given the nature of the Mechanical Clear, most decals go on top of the inner frame, so once the clear armor is put on, there's no risk of them coming off from friction. However, some cylinders do move, so when applying decals to movable cylinders, you need to carefully consider where the friction surfaces are.

In actual showcase builds, the red and yellow areas of the body are painted with clear paints, and honestly, adding a bit of clear paint does seem to make it look better. I briefly considered it myself, but I was so drained from applying all the decals that I just went ahead and reviewed it straight off the molded surface as-is. The monochrome color scheme does make it feel a little bare, but on the flip side, it makes the decals stand out even more.

One thought that crossed my mind after finishing all the decals was this — unlike the Alto custom, the decals for the First Mechanical Clear aren't text or markings, but mostly silver/gold cylinder frame decals applied to the inner frame. In other words... it makes you think you'd be better off just painting them with enamel instead of applying decals -.-; That would probably be faster too.. But for now, I figured I should stay true to the manufacturer's intent... ahem.

As a limited edition that really makes the most of the MG First 2.0's dense frame, it's a pretty impressive release — even if it does require some seriously challenging waterslide decal work. That said, I'm pretty sure I'd never build a second one. ^^:;;;
