Infinite Justice Gundam

Kit Review

Straight build
+ panel lining + decals

The Infinite Justice Gundam from Gundam Destiny, which had been teased with bits of info here and there, has finally been released as an MG. Personally, I wasn't really expecting anything special from SEED kits anymore — but since this was one of the more elegant-looking MS in the SEED lineup, I figured it'd look pretty great as an MG. And after cracking it open post-release, that's exactly the kind of kit it turned out to be. It's genuinely beautiful @_@ b

First off, the overall color separation is, as you'd expect from an MG, "perfect" — the green stripe on the chest, the green on the crotch and verniers, the yellow on the wings, even the pink circles on the beam sabers — everything is neatly color-separated without needing any seals. Even MG Freedom, which got a lot of flak for using a seal on the blue part of the rifle despite getting everything else right, has been outdone here — MG Inju (short for Infinite Justice) went "perfect" all the way down to the rifle. Strangely enough, that part made me especially happy.. ^_^; They always seemed to sabotage themselves by dropping the ball on color separation for weapons and such, but it looks like they've finally gotten their act together.

The molded color is a much deeper pink compared to the 1/100 days — it might look a little risqué in photos, but in person it actually feels quite premium. The digital camera tends to capture colors more intensely under lighting, so the real thing looks a bit softer than the photos suggest.

The body structure shares a lot in common with MG Freedom — the knee structure in particular is nearly identical. Of course, thanks to the completely different styling, everything from the frame to the outer armor is all-new parts, but the feel while building it was somehow similar to MG Freedom. That said, the joints across the board are reinforced compared to MG Freedom. The ankle joints in particular — which were a weak point in MG Freedom and pretty much every other SEED-line MG — feel significantly improved. And the hip joint strength is almost overkill-level sturdy.

Thanks to that, it can stand with a really ni~ce proportion even while carrying that massive backpack. Having built every SEED-line MG, most of them have great proportions but weak ankles, making it a pain to get them to stand in a decent pose. That goes for the bestseller MG Freedom, MG Freedom of course, and don't even get me started on Strike.. Sure, that's probably why most SEED-line MGs came bundled with a stand. But MG Inju doesn't include a stand, despite having that huge backpack throwing off the center of gravity. Of course a stand helps it shine, but that's what an Action Base is for — basically it's saying "I don't need no stand!" :-)

And that's really the biggest achievement of MG Inju — it feels like a kit that took all the subtle flaws that plagued the SEED-line MGs (great quality and style, but always with some nagging little issue) and fixed every single one of them. (Especially in terms of joint strength and the slightly lacking color separation.) Perfect color separation on top of perfect, the sturdiest joints of the bunch so it stands on its own just fine — meaning it can strike a pose with 100% of its proportions on full display. That's what makes it a true Best...

On top of that, not only does it have a full inner frame, but Infinite Justice's flashy weapon set is reproduced in full 100% glory, making this an incredibly accessory-rich kit. And the massive backpack, which you'd think they'd just focus on color separation for, is packed with various gimmicks — like the linked mechanism where spreading the verniers automatically opens the wings, and sliding the vernier covers and beam cannons to make it feel like a more "dynamic" backpack. There's even a separate gimmick to prop up the backpack at 90 degrees so the pose doesn't collapse — you can tell they put thought into every little corner, and that's great to see.

MG Inju introduces a few new gimmicks — one where you spread the hip joints slightly and lock them in place, and slide gimmicks on the side skirts that dramatically increase the range of motion. The hip-spreading gimmick is pretty slick in its own way, but honestly it doesn't seem to help that much with action poses. The improved side skirts, on the other hand, I really loved. Thanks to those, the legs can spread out wide regardless of the side skirts, making all kinds of dynamic poses possible.

Even setting aside all those structural improvements and gimmicks, the biggest appeal of MG Inju is ultimately, when all is said and done, the "beauty" that radiates from its gorgeous color and elegant styling. It's the kind of kit that, if someone who knows nothing about Gundam were picking one out, this would be one of the first to catch their eye. Like, you might not know where this robot comes from, but you'd think — it just looks cool. And on top of that, it's the mobile suit of Athrun, a character with a massive female fanbase, but even beyond that, it's a Gundam that has a distinctly feminine aesthetic just by its looks alone.

If I had to nitpick a few downsides.. the fit between some of the outer armor and the frame is almost excessively tight, making it really hard to remove the armor. The forearm armor and the back armor in particular are extremely difficult to take apart once assembled.. which was quite a pain for a reviewer like me who always has to strip the clothes off (? pervert?) kits. There aren't many kits where armor removal is this tough. If you're just building it for display and not planning to disassemble, it's a complete non-issue though.

There are also a few spots where the fit is a little loose — the side beam sabers, which seem structurally tricky to secure, and the beam boomerang parts attached to the shield feel just a tiiiny bit weak. Not so loose that they'll just fall off on their own, but relatively speaking they're not super secure, so you'll want to be a little careful when posing.

And the articulation might be a bit surprising — the knees don't fold to 180 degrees, and the ankle range of motion is quite limited. The knees you can kind of live with, but structurally the ankles barely fold forward, which means kneeling poses are completely impossible on this kit. (Yikes!) I was a bit taken aback when I first noticed this during assembly, but once I put it on a stand and started posing it, it poses so well that I kind of forgot about it. The limited ankle range of motion barely matters aside from the inability to do kneeling poses. (Gonna get constipated...)

The size is also... it felt oddly large, and comparing it to other kits confirmed it's noticeably taller. Especially next to the no-grade 1/100 — it's almost jarring.. (see photos) It's so massive it looks like a completely different scale, which is practically lore-breaking. Being big isn't necessarily a flaw, but it does feel a bit unbalanced when displayed alongside other kits.

These minor complaints aside, the feeling I got while building this kit ultimately comes down to one line.

Whoops.. this thing really has nothing to complain about..!

It fixed every complaint from the old SEED-line MGs, so what more is there to say..
And even the previously released 1/100 Inju was considered a pretty high-quality no-grade.. but next to MG Inju it looks completely outclassed.. T_T How can the difference be this big!

If you're a fan of the Infinite Justice's style.. a die-hard Athrun fan.. or you just think it looks gorgeous — this is a masterpiece MG I can wholeheartedly recommend. The imposing presence of those massive wings, the stunning color, rock-solid joints.. flawless quality..

The previous MG Impulse was excellent in quality but had somewhat limited mass appeal. MG Inju comes with even better quality and feels like a more broadly appealing kit, so I'd predict it has a good shot at becoming a bestseller in the tradition of MG Freedom. At the very least, among MG SEED Destiny kits — it's hands-down the BEST! :-)
