The MG Qubeley came out in August 2001, then the MG Qubeley Mk-II Puru Two's unit followed in February 2004. And now, over five years later, we finally have the last of the trio — the MG Qubeley Mk-II Elpeo Ple's unit. It took a full eight years, but the MG Qubeley trio is finally complete. If anything, Elpeo Ple's unit probably should have come out before Puru Two's, but hey, they're all out now so..
As anyone could have predicted, this kit is a clean(?) reuse of the 2001 MG Qubeley. Despite the Mk-II name, there's really no structural difference at all — the only way to tell them apart is by the beam saber shape. The colors are different though, going white-blue-red across the three kits, and just like Puru Two's unit, Elpeo Ple's blue is also done in gloss injection, giving it a beautifully glossy surface finish.
Sure, it's an MG design that's over 8 years old, but the sheer size, solid joint strength, incredible presence, and that gloss finish still hold up surprisingly well against more recent MGs. The shoulder binders lock in place nicely no matter how you position them, and the overall proportions feel very well-balanced. I especially want to give props to how well those big shoulder binders stay put. The one issue is that the center of gravity sits pretty high up, so you'll need to position the legs carefully when standing it up to keep it looking good.
Being an older kit, you can't expect much from the frame, but since such a large kit is built from a relatively small number of parts, each individual part is big and the assembly is pretty straightforward. Compared to the red MG Puru Two's unit, the difference here is an extra runner to match the beam saber/fin funnel colors — which actually means you get more content for the same price. Like Puru Two's unit, it also comes with large and lovely decals, and interestingly, no seals are included at all. This means there's not much panel lining to do, and the decal work goes by very quickly. In short, it's a very easy kit to build, and you can put together a large, clean-looking model in no time — making it a great choice for beginners too.
Anyway, this is a variation that should have come out much sooner, and it's clearly a filler release, but the satisfaction it delivers is actually quite high. Especially considering the ¥4,000 price tag, the presence and visual impact you get for the money is pretty much unbeatable. Color-wise, the red Puru Two's unit is more striking, but Elpeo Ple's Qubeley Mk-II with its deep, subtle gloss is a gorgeous kit in its own right. :-)
GOOD 3 : Excellent presence, stunning gloss finish, outstanding value for money
BAD
3 : A bit old to be calling it a new release, visible gate marks, slightly unstable lower body
