The MG Gundam Astray Red Frame, which many expected to get a general retail release, ended up coming out as a Club G exclusive — it's a bit of a mystery why the original Astray got the limited treatment when the Kai and Second R versions both got general retail MG releases. It's such a popular suit that it probably would've sold just fine as a regular release.
Anyway, it's been released as the definitive Astray, adding the original Astray backpack, weapons, and accessories that weren't included in the previous Kai or Second R versions. The newly added parts are satisfyingly well-made at MG quality. The new shield isn't all that different from what came in the previous SEED MGs, but the new backpack and rifle feel quite precisely engineered in terms of parts construction. On top of that, joint parts for storing the large swords on the side skirts have also been newly added.
The MG Astray doesn't make a huge leap in articulation compared to the 1/100 that was once hailed as a masterpiece (the 1/100 was just that good..), but it's a kit that's significantly improved in terms of joint strength. Tight polycaps are used throughout, so no matter what pose you put it in, everything locks in firmly — that's definitely a plus. ^^
Since it's built on the high-quality Astray body already proven by the Kai and Second R versions, this kit is a satisfying 110-point release as well. Cleaning up the undergated runners is a bit of a chore, but the snug, satisfying feel when assembling and the nice feel of the finished kit in hand make it well worth it.
Anyway, there are probably a lot of people who've been waiting for the MG original Astray — it may not be a general retail release, but at least it came out as a limited edition, so you'd better grab one while you can. :-)
