MG GN-0000-GNR-010

00 Raiser

Kit Review

Straight build
+ panel lining + decals

The MG 00 Gundam — which was already anticipated when the MG Exia came out and became a certainty when the MG Qan[T] dropped — has finally been officially released. I figured they'd release the MG 00 Gundam and 0 Raiser separately and then put out a combo pack too.. but nope, they went ahead and bundled everything including the GN Sword III into one big combo pack as the MG 00 Raiser.

Opening the box, you'll be a little intimidated by the sheer volume of contents.. it boasts 23 runners and over 500 parts. Sure, it's not quite up there with the monstrous FAZZ (-_-;) with its 700+ parts or the legendary Ex-S, but it's got way more parts than the MG Sinanju or most other large MGs. As a result, assembly takes about twice as long as a typical MG, and panel lining is the same story. Since this is essentially the 00 Raiser released as a full-option kit, the accessories are incredibly rich — and on top of that, with 5 light-up sections to deal with, it was quite a grueling kit to photograph, so the review ended up with well over 200 photos..

As expected, a good chunk of the Qan[T]'s frame is reused here, but on top of that you also get the parts unique to the 00 Gundam plus the 0 Raiser's frame, making this a pretty substantial kit even just in terms of the inner frame. The 0 Raiser in particular seems to have been designed with the PG as a reference — it's more intricately built than you'd expect. Overall articulation on the inner frame feels slightly below the Qan[T]'s, but it still shows off plenty of dynamic movement worthy of a new release.

The biggest issue with the 00 Raiser as a unit has always been the joint instability caused by the massive 0 Raiser on its back. HG kits are light enough that it's not a big deal, but with the 1/100 00 Gundam, the inner frame itself is perfectly fine — it's only once you mount the 0 Raiser that it can barely hold a pose with legs spread wide and leaning forward, and the PG is a bit better but still pretty heavy so it's not all that different. This was actually my biggest concern going into the MG 00 Raiser, but thankfully the joint strength turned out to be quite satisfying ^^

Probably due to weight considerations, the 0 Raiser itself is slightly smaller in volume compared to the 1/100, and in particular the side binders are smaller, which means the balance is excellent enough that it can stand upright without having to worry too much about posing. Given the 00's characteristically complex ankle articulation, I was worried about joint strength, but I'd say it passes. On top of that, a locking pin mechanism has been added to prevent the GN Drive mounts on the shoulders from drooping down due to the 0 Raiser binders — so even when the 0 Raiser binders are spread wide open in an action pose, they absolutely won't sag downward. The overall joint and articulation locking design is really well thought out, making this the most sturdy and stable 00 Raiser ever made ^^

The included accessories don't have a whole lot of MG 00-exclusive special features, but everything comes with somewhat upgraded detail overall... and on top of that, it's designed to accommodate a total of 5 LED units — the head, both GN Drives, and both 0 Raiser binders. The downside is that, probably due to cost, only 1 LED unit is included with the kit itself, so you have to track down the other 4 on your own. Actually installing all 5 LED units does look cool, but as you can see in the photos.. it's not exactly a dazzling, show-stopping effect. It's more like personal satisfaction for the builder, really. Having 5 of them also makes it a hassle to turn them on and off, and honestly the practicality doesn't seem all that high ;; (ugh.. the photoshoot was rough T_T)

Since the No Grade 1/100 00 Raiser came out so well, I was wondering how the MG would even top it — but while the two might look similar at first glance, once you actually handle it, the MG is superior in every way: proportions, articulation, (especially) joint strength, detail, accessory quality, you name it. Even with your eyes closed, the solid weight and tight, secure feel alone are enough to instantly tell the 1/100 and MG apart. MG is MG, after all.

And you can't overlook the fact that the ankle articulation is even better than the 1/100 00 Gundam or the MG Qan[T]. The fully side-folding ankles that caught so many people off guard on the HG 00 Gundam are almost perfectly replicated here!

If I had to nitpick some downsides.. the sheer part count means assembly takes quite a long time, though that could also be seen as a plus. The LED units aren't all that effective, and detaching the armor on the side skirt's GN Sword II mounting section is a bit of a pain. Also, just like the MG Qan[T], the green clear parts on the legs tend to pop off easily — but a tiny dab of glue fixes that right up. Overall, it's not a kit with any particularly standout unique strengths, but it's the kind of high-quality kit where it's hard to find any glaring flaws either.

In conclusion, it came out as a fully MG-worthy 00 Raiser that slightly exceeds expectations. Honestly, it's not the type of kit where you can feel the developer's soul poured into it, but it's what I'd call a "clean" MG. In particular, it deserves high marks for significantly addressing the notorious joint instability issues unique to the 00 Raiser, and while the price is steep, the contents are absolutely packed as befits a full-option kit — the kind where just opening the box feels satisfying. If you're a fan of the 00 Gundam and 0 Raiser, this is obviously a must-have. In some ways it's even cleaner than the PG — this is the definitive injection-molded 00 Raiser. :-)
