Delta Plus

Kit Review

Straight build + Panel lining + Decals

Riding the popularity of the Gundam UC anime, the lineup has been expanding actively across both HGUC and MG, and this time the Delta Plus has been released as an MG. As the flight-type unit based on the Delta Gundam — which itself was based on the Hyaku-Shiki — this new release even hints at the possibility of an MG Delta Gundam down the line.

First off, like the Zeta/Zeta Plus, this is a classic transforming unit that converts into Waverider form, and compared to the earlier Zeta 2.0 and Zeta Plus, it boasts much slimmer and more refined proportions. The body lines are so well done that in MS mode, it barely even looks like a transforming unit. ^^

Also like the Jessta, despite being a transforming kit it features a complete full-body frame, which makes the build process a real treat. True to a modern kit, the color separation is thorough right down to the verniers, and the molded colors are brighter and more refined than the HGUC, so it photographs really well too.

The thing I was most curious about was naturally the transformation gimmick, and it shows a slight step forward from the Zeta → Zeta Plus → Zeta 2.0 progression. The basic transformation process — tucking the head in, folding the sides, and plugging the hip joint plate into the back — is the same, but the biggest difference is that auxiliary locking parts are included for the Waverider transformation. The trickiest part of any Zeta-style transformation has always been securing the hip joint plate to the back, and the Delta Plus uses the same locking method as the MG Zeta 2.0. That method alone is enough to get it locked in fine, but with the additional auxiliary locking parts, you can get an even tighter, more precise fit.

These auxiliary locking parts are optional, so leaving them out won't affect the transformation at all. But once you actually use them, they're easy to attach and make everything noticeably more solid — so there's really no reason not to use them ^^. Also, the somewhat iffy locking of the neck going in and out has always been an issue, but the gimmick that supports the underside of the neck does its job well, so that problem is completely solved here too. On top of that, the rear leg vernier deployment — which the HGUC handled with a removable part — has been given a proper slide gimmick in the MG, allowing for a clean self-contained transformation.

The proportions in Waverider form are incredibly slender — it's the slimmest Waverider-type transforming unit released so far. Thanks to the auxiliary locking parts, the stability after transformation has also improved, and in that regard this kit deserves a perfect 100 out of 100. That said, there are a couple of minor gripes: trial and error still tends to happen during the hip joint transformation (you'll know what I mean once you try it..), and the shield's locking angle is a bit ambiguous, which can leave you fumbling around a little.

Another issue I noticed is that the shoulder locking plate tends to pop off during transformation. Since it moves in two stages, the locking pin feels a bit weak. Honestly, it feels much easier to just remove the arms entirely before transforming the hip section, then reattach them afterward.

Overall, it's an impressive kit — despite being a transforming kit, the incredibly slim proportions are surprising, and the complete full-body frame along with the improved locking mechanisms really stand out. That said, the transformation process itself still feels a bit daunting to repeat multiple times, and there's a lingering bittersweet feeling that the MG Zeta Plus from 10 years ago — while chunkier — had a simpler and more straightforward transformation. Having transformed my MG Zeta Plus again for comparison during this review, I was reminded once more what a clean, well-executed transforming kit that was. (Even if its proportions look a bit pudgy next to the new Delta Plus..)

It's not the kind of kit that gives you that thrilling, special rush, so giving it over 100 points is a bit of a stretch.. But as a modern-style Waverider transforming kit that's solidly well-made, it's definitely a must-have for anyone who loves transforming units. :-)
