Alongside the SEED anime remaster, the second kit in the newly launched MG SEED lineup is the Blitz Gundam. The Blitz Gundam is based on a black color scheme with red and purple coloring densely woven throughout, making it a tricky kit to accurately reproduce in molded color. The older 1/100 had better color separation than most other 1/100s, but still inevitably required a fair amount of sticker work.
But MG is MG after all!
The MG Blitz Gundam has excellent parts separation that lets you reproduce its uniquely complex color combination almost perfectly. Every vernier on the body is color-separated in multiple layers, and even the white band in the middle of the Trikeros is cleanly separated — meaning no color-matching stickers are needed at all. In terms of color separation alone, it feels better than any previous MG out there. ^^
The SEED shared frame first introduced with the MG Duel Gundam carries over to the MG Blitz as well, and it's a solid platform with great joint strength and articulation. The joints in particular have a really tight, snug feel that gives the whole frame a very stable sensation. Since the Blitz is slimmer and lighter than the Duel + Assault Shroud, the whole body feels even more tightly locked in place.
One thing that genuinely surprised me about the MG Blitz — beyond the excellent color separation — was the unexpectedly refined detail work. It's not everywhere, but some of the additional inner parts beyond the shared frame have suddenly(?) gotten a lot better. The skirt interior detail in particular feels more precise and three-dimensional than any other MG I've seen, which gives a real sense of visual satisfaction. Even the UC-lineage MG Marasai had pretty bland detail.. so it's a mystery why this MG SEED kit suddenly gets such intricate detailing. Whether it's a different development team, or whether they figured this kit needed some extra selling points to move units — I'm not sure. But either way, it definitely makes the building experience more enjoyable. ^^;
The Trikeros and Gleipnir — weapons unique to the Blitz — are also on a completely different level from the old 1/100 in terms of parts breakdown, achieving a high degree of color separation and detail. You can really feel the effort that went into sweating the small stuff. The MG Blitz also has its own exclusive gimmicks: the deployment of the Mirage Colloid generator on the shoulders, and an articulation gimmick for the heel structure.
One downside is that while the intricate parts breakdown is great, some parts feel a little loose in terms of how securely they hold. Whether it's the snap-fit design or tolerances in the mold, certain verniers, some of the red color-separated sections (especially around the skirt), and the Lancer Dart mounting points inside the Trikeros all feel a bit weak. You can of course fix them with a bit of glue, but compared to the overall high quality of the joints and build, it does feel a little unbalanced in places.
Also, despite the outstanding detail in certain areas, the existing SEED shared frame is still a bit plain, which creates another sense of imbalance. This will probably be the same story for other MG SEED kits down the line.. If they're going to keep reusing it as a base, I wish they'd put more precise mechanical molding into it. The complete lack of any frame in the head is another minor gripe.
To sum it all up — there are some shortcomings, but nothing seriously wrong with it. This is a high-quality MG. It feels like a step up from the old MG Aile Strike, and even from the MG Duel/Assault Shroud which already had a pretty solid package. Maybe part of it is that I didn't have huge expectations going in, but at a point when even the MG Marasai left me feeling a bit underwhelmed, this kit suddenly shows up with this dazzling parts breakdown wizardry and detailing.. it's kind of ironic. Have Bandai's developers finally turned over to a new generation?
For fans of SEED or Nicol, this kit will bring real satisfaction, and even if you weren't particularly interested, it's an MG worth taking a second look at. I have my own personal scoring system for MGs, and I don't just hand out top marks for good quality alone.. It takes something that makes your fingertips tingle, a "wait, hold on?!?!" culture shock moment, or a sense of the developer's dedication and soul — that's what earns those scores. The MG Blitz is far from a perfect kit, but compared to recent MGs, there's definitely something special you can feel in your fingertips that makes you want to give it a little extra. "When we actually put our minds to it, pulling this off is a piece of cake." That's the kind of Bandai developer showmanship I see in this kit. As an old-school fan, my personal regret is that I wish they'd applied this level of detail and vernier color separation wizardry to the Marasai instead.. They clearly had the ability but didn't do it, which somehow makes it all the more frustrating. (A little annoying too ㅡ_ㅡ.. I'm sorry I couldn't save you, Marasai)
Anyway, the parts volume doesn't look all that large, yet it's priced at ¥4000.. I was starting to wonder if MG price inflation was finally kicking in — but after finishing the build, I found myself nodding along at the price. For the level of care that went into it, the value is absolutely there even with the smaller volume. This was an MG that made my fingertips tingle for the first time in a while.
