MG GAT-X303

Aegis Gundam

Kit Review

Straight build + Panel lining + Decals

The Aegis Gundam, the last of the five original Gundam SEED suits, has finally joined the MG lineup. It was a release that felt inevitable, so I wasn't expecting too much — but given the insane quality we've been seeing from recent SEED MGs, I figured it wouldn't be anything ordinary. And sure enough, once I cracked it open, this thing turned out to be such an over-the-top quality kit that you almost have to wonder why they went this far. ^^;

First off, despite the complex transformation gimmick, the modern polycap system and structural design deliver pretty solid joint strength and gimmick stability. The proportions have been refined into a sleeker silhouette, and on top of the transformation, they've also included a full-body frame and near-full-fold articulation. And the frame detail, armor detail, molding on the inside of the armor panels — it's all top-class stuff, even among MGs.

The complex and bizarre transformation gimmick I was most worried about actually feels simpler and more streamlined than either the 1/100 or HG versions. Sure, there are so many moving parts that getting everything lined up is tricky, but I'm happy to say nothing feels loose or fails to hold its position. The transformation was always going to be a weird one, so I didn't have high hopes — but MG is MG. They always find a way to do it differently.

Structurally, the waist unit in particular stands out in terms of quality — perfect color separation, precise molding, and a whole range of articulation gimmicks packed in, making it feel extremely well-executed. The cockpit hatch is also easier to open than on other kits, the precision recreation of the linked joint gimmicks across all four arms and legs is impressive, and on top of all that they even threw in articulated cylinder gimmicks... There are just so many things to praise about this kit.

If I had to nitpick... the transformation process, while improved, is still no walk in the park. During transformation, the head camera eye tends to pop out a bit too easily, the waist armor joint rotation feels cramped and the connection tends to come apart (though it holds fine once transformed), and the shoulder joint placement feels a little awkward. At the end of the day, the source design is what it is, so the transformation is still a bit of a challenge. There's also the double-layered front skirt that looks great but pops off easily, and the grip holding the rifle feels slightly unreliable.

To wrap it all up, you could say it's impossible to do the Aegis Gundam any better than this. Across virtually every aspect, it's hard to find any major flaw — quality is consistently A-grade all around, and I want to give a big round of applause to the Bandai development team for their craftsmanship in recreating the transformation gimmick while also delivering a full frame, full articulation, and intricate detail. The recent MG Gundam SEED kits really are just insanely good.

That said, as an old-school fan, I do have a bit of a gripe about why they pour this much passion into non-Universal Century SEED kits while giving classics like the Marasai a half-hearted treatment. ^^; And while I genuinely can't say enough good things about the quality of this kit, I'd actually hesitate to recommend it to everyone. That's probably down to the nature of the unit itself — it's very much a love-it-or-hate-it machine, so unlike something like the MG Buster Gundam which has broad, easygoing appeal, this one's a harder sell across the board.

Anyway, for anyone who's been waiting for the MG Aegis, this is going to be an incredible treat — but for those who aren't Gundam SEED fans, it's a high-quality kit that I'd still hesitate to recommend. A bit of an ambiguous conclusion, I know. :-)
