MG RGZ-95C

ReZEL Type-C [Defenser a+b-unit] [GR]

Kit Review

Straight build + Panel lining + Decals

Following the ReZEL and ReZEL Commander Type, the ReZEL Type-C — which had already appeared as an HGUC — has now been released as an MG. The Type-C is characterized by the large Defenser unit on its back, and the HGUC version came equipped with the b unit featuring two mega beam launchers. This time around, the MG comes bundled with not just the b unit but also the a unit with its micro missile packs — both in one box.

Opening up the box — which is one of the largest and thickest in the MG lineup — you're greeted by 26 runners and over 500 parts spilling out, and just looking at it all feels incredibly satisfying. ^^; Of course, compared to the MG Full Armor Unicorn that once set the all-time record for part count, this is relatively modest (?) — but with both the Defenser a and b units included, the sheer number of parts is still pretty impressive.

The main body itself is 99% identical to the existing MG ReZEL with only the molded color changed, so it delivers the same articulation, joint strength, and frame detail. The one 1% that's different is that, because the backpack has gotten heavier, the backpack mounting parts now bolt directly to the back section of the body. On top of that, a support stand that attaches to the rear skirt has been added to keep the kit from toppling backward under the weight — and while it can stand well enough without it, once you actually use the stand it does a much better job of holding a natural, stable proportion, so I think it'll come in very handy. ^^

The mega beam launchers on the Defenser b unit are the same as those included with the MG ReZEL Commander Type, so there's nothing particularly new there — though the mega particle cannons on the side units do have a pretty convincing internal frame inside them. As for the a unit, a total of 12 hatches open across its six micro missile packs, and the impact of a fully-opened action pose is pretty impressive. The a unit also comes with a PG-sized beam saber, but it's so large and heavy that the hand joint really struggles to hold it up. That made it genuinely difficult to get a decent action pose out of it, and honestly it was a bit of a pain to photograph too..;

Both the Defenser a and b units are large and look great, so whichever configuration you go with, you get an impressively imposing and powerful-looking silhouette — and that's really the biggest selling point of this kit. That said, while the arm and leg articulation is good, the other joints aren't great, so the action poses themselves aren't all that dynamic. The b unit in particular is a bit disappointing in that the two large mega beam launchers can only point forward and don't spread out to the sides, which limits your posing options. The a unit, on the other hand, has all 12 micro missile hatches that open up, which gives it plenty of visual impact on its own.

The transformation process itself is the same as the MG ReZEL, but compared to the boxy, stubby Waverider of the standard ReZEL, the Type-C looks considerably more impressive in Waverider mode — probably thanks to all the extra weapons hanging off it. The b unit Waverider looks great, but the a unit Waverider is especially cool — just like in MS mode, opening all 12 missile hatches fully gives it a really spectacular look. That said, the transformation process is fiddly, and the fact that things don't lock together very securely after transforming — especially the legs — is still a frustration.

To sum it all up: the strengths and weaknesses of the existing MG ReZEL carry over intact, but the abundance of weapons makes it look so much more impressive that the overall quality feel is a notch higher. That said, it's hard to justify giving it more than the 99 points I gave the original MG ReZEL — certain issues like the post-transformation stability and some awkward joints make it impossible for me to go above 100... ^^;

Either way, even if you were left a little unsatisfied with the original MG ReZEL, this kit should give you a bit more to enjoy. If you're someone who likes to take your time with a build and wants plenty of parts to work through, or if you just love kits with a big, imposing presence, this should be a pretty fun one. :-)

Internal Frame★★★★★Transformation gimmick + full-body frame, and even the weapon packs have frames..
Detail★★★★★Great-looking frame with nice depth, and clean exterior panels.
