Kit Review
Straight build + Panel lining + Decals
Straight build + Panel lining + Decals
V Gundam, G Gundam, Wing Gundam, and even Turn A have had MG releases for ages, and now Gundam X has finally joined the MG lineup. Being one of the less popular series in the Gundam anime franchise — practically considered a "black history" — I guess it's no surprise the MG took this long to arrive. (So sad T_T)
Not long ago, Gundam X was released in the HGAW lineup(written as "released," read as "unearthed") and it was reborn as a high-quality action figure with a slim, modern-style proportion, excellent articulation, and solid joint strength. The MG Gundam X seems to have been designed with the same concept as the HGAW — it came out as a kit with the same proportions and outstanding articulation quality.
First off, the most impressive thing about the MG Gundam X is its "articulation quality." Great articulation quality means having both smooth, full range of motion and solid joint strength that holds poses after you move them — and this kit delivers on both fronts beautifully. Among recent MGs, the Aile Strike RM had a similar feel, being a kit that balanced great articulation with sturdy joints. Though with the Strike RM, the joints felt a bit stiff — the MG Gundam X feels smooth yet holds position well, giving it a slightly more refined feel overall.
Either way, this is a kit that's really well-tuned for posing and fiddling around with, and in that regard it might just be the best MG ever made. I especially love that you can stand it up without any trouble even with the large reflector and Satellite Cannon loaded on its back. On top of that, the rifle grip with the interchangeable fingers is incredibly secure — once you put it in the hand, it's not going anywhere.
The MG Gundam X naturally comes with a full inner frame, and it's an all-new frame design with pretty solid detail — it feels a step above the mass-produced frames used in recent Wing Gundam and Strike series kits. I'd been a little disappointed by how the MG frames have been getting simpler lately, but this kit's frame quality exceeded my expectations, which is great.
Beyond that, the weapons and design specs are reproduced in proper MG fashion — the fully articulated Shield Buster Rifle and Satellite Cannon can be transformed and used in various configurations just like in the show. And the large reflector, which is iconic to Gundam X, combines a hologram sheet with honeycomb-shaped clear parts to create a three-dimensional, shimmering iridescent effect.
Overall, this is a very clean, high-quality kit that's hard to find fault with. If I had to nitpick, the scope section of the Shield Buster Rifle feels a bit loose, but aside from that it's nearly flawless quality. Assembly feels easier than most other MGs, the panel lining points are just right, and with no dry decals or waterslide decals, the build process feels refreshingly straightforward.
In terms of quality, this thing is practically a perfect 100 out of 100 — but there's something a little bittersweet about how it's starting to feel increasingly standardized through CAD design. It's like a really tasty, clean-tasting dish... but you can definitely taste the MSG. In that sense, there's almost nothing to deduct points for, but I also find myself hesitating to give it a lot of bonus points either. To use a K-pop audition analogy — the technical score for the singing is a perfect 100, but something feels a little lacking in the emotional delivery of the lyrics.
Anyway, if you've been waiting for a Gundam X kit, this will more than satisfy you — and it's also a kit I'd confidently recommend to anyone who just wants to enjoy a fun, satisfying build. It's definitely better than the MG AGE series that always felt a bit loose and off, or the MG SEED kits sharing their copy-paste frames — this one delivers quality that exceeds expectations :-)
