Gundam Fenice Rinascita

Kit Review

Straight build + Panel lining + Decals

The Gundam Fenice Rinascita has arrived as the fifth Build Fighters MG, and it's quite the looker. It seems to be a fairly popular unit among Build Fighters fans, which is probably why it got the MG treatment. ^^

While it's based on the Wing Gundam in lore, virtually the entire exterior is a new design, so about 80% of the runners are brand new. Only three frame runners from the MG Wing Gundam are reused — and even then, nearly half the frame parts have been replaced with new ones, leaving a large amount of leftover parts. So in practice, this is essentially a 90% new kit.

First off, the flashy proportions loaded with all sorts of attachments and the colorful color scheme are reproduced beautifully even in a straight build. Since it's based on the highly refined MG Wing Gundam shared frame, the articulation and joint strength are both excellent. That said, with so much hanging off every part of the body, even getting a standing pose right takes some effort, and posing in general requires quite a bit of fiddling. The shield in particular is so massive and gets in the way so much that it ends up being more of a nuisance than anything. -_-

The accessories are quite generous. The signature beam mantle is provided in clear pink plastic with three-section articulation, and the functionality of the Buster Rifle Custom is faithfully reproduced. Notably, an improved new Action Base based on the existing Action Base 1 is included. It addresses the shortcomings of the original by simplifying the movement and improving stability, making it a genuinely useful piece. On top of that, the joint parts that connect the stand to the main body hold incredibly well, keeping poses locked in nicely when adjusting on the stand — that's definitely a big plus.

Despite the excellent articulation, the body is so cluttered that posing still feels tricky somehow — but thanks to the very useful Action Base and joint parts, there's still a lot of fun to be had posing this kit. Spread it out wide with the large beam mantle and you can get some really impressive display poses. That said, the foot contact with the ground isn't great, so I'd advise against posing it on a flat surface — since they've included a good stand, just keep it airborne. ^^;

The flight mode transformation, a staple of Wing Gundam-type kits, is also included. Similar to the original Wing Gundam, it's a fairly simple transformation — fold the legs a bit, raise the claws on the forearms, and cover with the shield. There's a peg inside the side skirt that you pull out and plug into the side of the shin to improve stability, but since you also have to open the shin cover to expose the verniers, the fit ends up being a bit ambiguous and doesn't feel all that useful. It's just a simple, straightforward transformation process — nothing more, nothing less, very Wing Gundam-like....

All in all, if you're a Build Fighters fan — especially one who's had a soft spot for the Fenice Rinascita — this is a kit you'll be very happy with at this level of quality. And even if you just like the look of it, it's a solid upper-tier MG worth recommending. It's not 100% perfect, but it's far from a disappointment — for those who dig the style, it's easily a 99 out of 100. :-)
