MG ZGMF-X09A

Justice Gundam

Kit Review

Straight build + Panel lining + Decals

In 2017, Justice Gundam finally got the MG treatment. Even as other SEED Gundams were getting MG releases one after another, there was no sign of a Justice MG for well over a decade — and in the end, it came out based on the MG Freedom 2.0 frame, just like the Providence Gundam. Whether the intent was to get as much mileage as possible out of a well-made frame, who knows, but either way it's a relief that we got an MG release at all. ^^;

Justice Gundam's successor, Infinite Justice Gundam, already got an MG release back in 2008 and it was a pretty solid, high-quality kit. This time around, the MG Justice Gundam has come out as an even more refined, higher-quality kit — befitting its later release date.

First off, since the MG Freedom 2.0 frame is used as-is, the structural characteristics are the same. The frame may be plain on detail, but its excellent functionality and articulation deliver top-tier poseability and decent joint strength. That said, there's still a risk of the hip joints breaking, so you'll want to be extra careful when moving the legs, and since it doesn't use polycaps, the joints feel a little stiff rather than smooth — that's just something you have to live with.

Still, compared to the MG Providence — which felt a bit shaky in the joint strength department due to its bulkier proportions — this one feels more stable, and it can stand upright with a reasonably nice silhouette even with the massive Fatum OO on its back. Also, since a display stand is pretty much essential when the Fatum OO is deployed, a new-style action base with improved holding strength is included. The action base can be plugged into the functional joint parts on the underside of the Fatum OO in various orientations, and the grip is solid enough to pull off stable aerial poses.

The Fatum OO itself is packed with all sorts of new MG-worthy gimmicks. The wings can extend much further out to the sides, and multi-stage extension and rotation gimmicks have been added to the beam cannon sections. The rear verniers also feature a linked mechanism where the covers and inner verniers move together, and even the small rotary turrets can not only rotate but also have their elevation adjusted. The one downside is that the sliding joint on the white beam cannon and the small vertical fins don't hold very well and tend to pop off — that's a bit of a letdown.

While some of the smaller parts could hold better, the overall connection between the main body, Fatum OO, and action base is solid, making this actually better than the Freedom 2.0 as a display kit for action poses. When mounting Justice Gundam on top of the Fatum OO, you can remove the peg from the sole of the foot and plug it very securely into the hole on top of the Fatum OO. The beam saber storage in the side skirts is also well-designed and sturdy, and dedicated finger parts that work perfectly with the triangular beam boomerang handles are included — overall, the attention paid to connection strength throughout the kit is really appreciated.

Beyond these structural strengths, the sleek and sharp modern proportions combined with the precise detailing across the whole body make for a very visually satisfying kit. All in all, this is a kit that benefits from the latest technology despite its late arrival, and for anyone who's been waiting a long time for an MG Justice Gundam, it seems like a great gift that more than makes up for the long wait. :-)

* The scoring system used only for MG has been carried over from First 1.0 twenty years ago,
so applying it uniformly even to the latest kits — whose quality has leveled up across the board — is honestly a bit ambiguous.
Since it's just my personal take and can't clearly capture the differences in kit quality over the years,
please don't read too much into it and just use it as a loose reference.
(For kits scoring above 100, take it to mean the quality is much better than kits of the past.)
