MG AGE-IIMG

Gundam AGE II Magnum

Kit Review

Straight build + Panel lining + Seals

The Gundam AGE II Magnum has been released as the first MG kit from Build Divers. It's essentially the MG Gundam AGE II released back in 2012 with Magnum-specific parts added on, and since the basic framework is the same as the AGE II, pretty much all the characteristics feel nearly identical.

The parts separation and detail are clean overall, and articulation is on the better side, but the transformation gimmicks still make the whole thing feel a bit unstable. The joint strength isn't loose per se, but there are quite a few bits that wobble here and there, and it just doesn't have that satisfying tight, snug feel overall.

Thankfully, the F Funnels added for the Magnum version slide in from the top to lock in place, so they don't fall off easily. The larger Hyper Dodge Rifle Magnum also holds well since the hand grip is strong enough and it can be additionally secured at the wrist. They've put some thought into keeping things locked in place like this, so aside from the front skirts that pop off easily, fewer parts fall off during posing than you'd expect. That said, there's so much hanging off this thing that getting it into a pose still takes a fair bit of fussing around.

The transformation process into Phoenix Mode is almost identical to the existing MG Gundam AGE II, and while the stability after transformation is a little shaky, it holds together well enough. In this way, whether in MS mode or flight mode, it's not exactly loose, but it's not rock-solid either — a bit of an in-between situation.

Anyway, it does have a clean overall look, but there's nothing that really makes it pop as something special. If you enjoyed Build Divers, this seems like a perfectly decent kit to have fun with. :-)

* The scoring system used only for MG has been carried over from First 1.0 twenty years ago,
so applying it uniformly even to the latest kits — whose quality has leveled up across the board — is honestly a bit ambiguous.
Since it's just my personal take and can't clearly capture the differences in kit quality over the years,
please don't read too much into it and just use it as a loose reference.
(For kits scoring above 100, take it to mean the quality is much better than kits of the past.)
