MG ZGMF-1000/A1

Gunner Zaku Warrior [Lunamaria Custom]

Kit Review

Straight build + Panel lining + Seals

The Zaku Warrior — one of Gundam SEED Destiny's most popular mecha — has finally made it to MG as the MG Gunner Zaku Warrior [Lunamaria Hawke Custom]. It took 14 years after the No Grade 1/100 release, and 11 years after the MG Force Impulse Gundam, to finally get the MG treatment.

First off, Lunamaria's signature color came out beautifully in a deep crimson molded color — not quite pink, not quite red. The proportions do a great job of capturing the Zaku Warrior's characteristic hefty feel, but even accounting for current trends, the head does feel a bit too small.

Despite the stocky build, it pulls off decent articulation thanks to the hip slide gimmick. The ankles in particular are very flexible, giving it great, stable ground contact when posing. It also has that solid, weighty MG feel with a full frame packed inside, and the joint strength holds up well against the weight, making this a very stable kit overall. On top of that, the power cables on the legs use a single-piece molding that still articulates at each segment — a nice premium touch.

The Gunner Pack has color separation and detail that's fully up to MG standards. The power cables are provided as mesh pipes with wires inside, and the sturdy multi-joint arm lets you position the barrel (M1500 Orthros High-Energy Long-Range Beam Cannon) at all sorts of angles. The hands that grip the weapon use the typical interchangeable finger system, and they hold the weapon securely enough.

The biggest disappointment with this kit is the frame. They did implement a full-body frame, but the detail is so bare that you start to wonder if this is really okay. There's clearly plenty of space where more detail could have been added, and it really shows that they didn't put much effort into it. If the frame detail had been done well, the overall quality would have been so much higher — it's a real shame.

Also, you can remove the helmet and rotate the mono-eye, but the helmet doesn't come off easily, and the mono-eye is stiff and hard to turn. On top of that, the head is small and the mono-eye opening is narrow, so even when you do rotate it, you can barely see the difference. -_-

Overall, it's a bit hard to rate... Even before release, there were complaints that the sparse parts and plain frame made it no different from an RE/100. That said, the solid, weighty feel is quite different from an RE/100 in terms of hands-on experience. (MG is still MG, after all.)

Anyway, there are various things to gripe about, but this kit stands out for its hefty volume and weight, backed up by reassuringly sturdy joints. It looks like there'll be various Zaku Warrior color variants down the line, and at ¥4,300, the package is actually pretty satisfying. Still, you can't quite shake the feeling that they could have done more but didn't — it's one of those subtly underwhelming kits. :-)

* The scoring system used only for MG has been carried over from First 1.0 twenty years ago,
so applying it uniformly even to the latest kits — whose quality has leveled up across the board — is honestly a bit ambiguous.
Since it's just my personal take and can't clearly capture the differences in kit quality over the years,
please don't read too much into it and just use it as a loose reference.
(For kits scoring above 100, take it to mean the quality is much better than kits of the past.)
