GM Quel

Kit Review

Straight build + Partial paint + Panel lining + Decals

Following the GM Custom, the GM Quel was released as a variation. The GM Quel is pretty much a design that only exists on paper — it barely appears in the anime at all. It shows up briefly in the background during the Titans founding scene near the end of the 0083 anime, and that's about it. Even so, the reason it got released is simple: it reuses not just the base of the NT-1 and GM Custom, but also a good chunk of the outer armor as well.

Sure, its origins are what they are, but it's got a pretty unique presence thanks to that rare dark blue Titans color scheme (strictly speaking, aside from the Mk-II, there's really nothing else in this color). The design is relatively sleek too — it gives off this impression of a mix between the Mk-II and the GM Custom, and it looks pretty darn cool.

The body and limb skeleton are basically the same as the NT-1 and GM Custom, but it's much closer to the GM Custom's base. Some of the outer armor, the head, weapons, and elbow joints have been changed — it almost feels like a color variant with a few swapped parts. The molded colors are so different that it looks like a completely different unit, but when you dig into the details, it's pretty much the same kit. The legs carry over the GM Custom's quirky 45-degree knee joint structure as-is, and the inner frame and most of the outer armor are identical. The backpack and rear view are the same too, and on the front, only a few parts like the cockpit and neck piece are new designs — everything else is just a different molded color.

Weapons-wise, the GM Quel includes the same GM Rifle as the GM Custom, but the machine gun from the GM Custom is gone, replaced by a short beam rifle. Also, the GM Custom came with a figure of Captain Burning, while the GM Quel includes a Nina Purpleton figure. These figures still feel way too weak as a substitute for the NT-1's Full Armor;; The wrong molded color on the heel is exactly the same issue as the GM Custom too. (Variations just can't hide it..)

One interesting point is that the elbow joint isn't the double-split part setup from the NT-1 and GM Custom — instead, it achieves a double joint with a single simple piece. On the base kits, the double elbow joint is made up of two separate part assemblies (which ends up being closer to a triple joint), but in practice the articulation and sturdiness aren't that great for what it looks like. The GM Quel simplifies this into a single piece double joint, and the result is actually sturdier while achieving nearly full arm fold.

Overall, the build quality is pretty much on par with the GM Custom. Decent articulation, decent proportions, leg joint strength that feels just a little lacking, action poses that come together well enough... I'd say it's worth recommending to anyone who loves the charisma of the Titans color scheme. The design looks great and the molded colors aren't bad either. Beyond that though, well... it's a kit that's a bit of an odd recommendation^^;

CategoryRatingAnalysis
Seam Lines★★★★Made a fair effort here and there to hide the seam lines. The leg color separation is satisfying.
Molding Color / Color Separation★★★★A surprisingly clean Titans charisma. The heel molded color is still wrong though.
Proportions★★★★☆Sleek styling, solid proportions.
Articulation★★★☆Improved arms, and the leg and ankle articulation range is decent enough.
Joint Strength★★★Arms are good, grip is average. The knees are still just a little loose.
Internal Frame★★★☆Leg and backpack frames. Double frame in the calves. Details are a bit plain though.
Detail★★★★☆Overall, quite a bit of care put in. The right areas are properly brought out.
Weapons / Accessories★★★★Beam rifle, machine gun. Weapons are decent enough.. and Nina's figure.
Parts Count / Price★★★★279 parts total. Parts per ¥1000: 93. Just okay for the price.
Uniqueness★★★Released simply because it was easy to do as a variation, but one of the few Titans color kits out there.
Dalong's Point : 76 pts.
