MG RX-78-2

Gundam Ver. 1.5

Kit Review

Straight build + Partial paint + Panel lining + Decals

Under the banner of "Evolving MG," something unusual happened — the same Gundam got a version upgrade. The RX-78 is undeniably the most iconic protagonist mobile suit in all of Gundam, but being the very first MG released meant it was starting to look pretty dated as time went on. In the end, rather than a full Ver. 2.0 overhaul, it was re-released as Ver. 1.5 — a partial upgrade.

Ver. 1.5 was essentially refined to mimic the PG RX-78 released in 1998. The excessive panel lines from v1.0 were largely dropped, and the PG's leg frame, movement structure, outer armor layout, and hatch opening were all copied and scaled down as faithfully as possible. With the Gundam Hammer and Beam Jabelin from the PG custom set thrown in as well, it was built to feel like a miniature PG.

The most jaw-dropping feature of Ver. 1.5 is, without a doubt, the leg frame. The leg skeleton — formed using the same one-piece molding technique previously reserved for PGs — is nothing short of "spectacular." It's actually more complex than the PG version, made up of 14 parts with 4 working cylinders and 3 articulated joints, making it the most intricate one-piece part ever made. On top of that, the outer armor attaches in a way that completely hides any seam lines — a parts breakdown taken straight from the PG — and two hatches open at the back of the legs.

These leg frames aren't just structurally redesigned to look PG-like — the articulation has been brought up to PG level as well. The fully 180-degree folding joint structure and natural proportions are simply stunning. Just changing the legs alone gives the kit a completely different look overall. And of course, action poses look fantastic too! On the flip side, the ankle articulation feels relatively lacking compared to those incredible knee joints. The ankles are still a big improvement over v1.0, but the knees are just so amazing that... ^^;

The blue parts on the front of the torso have also been swapped out with panel lines that directly mirror the PG version, and the front skirt armor and the... ahem, crotch (-_-) area have been refined in PG style as well. The head is an entirely new design — ditching the slightly goofy-looking v1.0 head in favor of something much closer to the PG. The backpack and other areas remain unchanged, and in particular, the arms are carried over almost directly from v1.0.

Since v1.0 had a real problem with the elbow joints being super loose and popping out, the arms on v1.5 got a slight tweak to the elbow joint structure as an improvement. Thanks to that, they don't pop out as easily and feel a bit more solid — but aside from the shoulders being cleaned up nicely in PG style, the arms don't feel like they've changed much at all, which is a real shame. The torso and legs got a sleek makeover, but the arms still feel kind of old-school... and the articulation hasn't improved either.

The two newly added weapons are the same ones that came in the PG Custom Set, and the detail on them is pretty impressive. The Gundam Hammer's chain section isn't an assembly-type — it comes as a finished piece, packaged separately as a single plastic ring. It looks really clean. The Beam Jabelin has a clear, mace-like tip, and if you want it to look right, you'll need to paint it in a clear pink shade. Either way, with these two weapons added to the lineup, the MG RX-78 Ver. 1.5's arsenal feels incredibly well-stocked.

There are a lot of improvements made in pursuit of that PG style, but there are still some frustrating points that remain. First off, even accounting for this being a half-revised v1.5, the barely-changed arms look pretty unbalanced. They look a bit weak, the style feels dated, and the articulation isn't great either... At least the bad elbow-popping problem got fixed, so I guess that's something to be thankful for.
I was hoping the Core Fighter section would get some improvements too, but it's left as-is. The waist section, which feels oddly loose for some reason, is the same story.

The PG-style redesigned head has a weird issue where the back of the head catches on the yellow neck part, limiting its range of motion a bit. It's also a bit of a bummer that the head antennae aren't made as separate parts and are instead handled with stickers. And the legs, which got such a dramatic PG-style overhaul, have unfortunately... inherited the PG's flaws right along with the good stuff. (T_T) Why did they have to copy the weak hatch attachment that falls off so easily too? Try to open one and it just pops right off most of the time. On top of that, when you close the hatches they don't sit flush, so they end up looking slightly open. The PG-style replacement shoulders are also a bit... the shoulder attachment is strangely loose so they won't hold their angle properly. If you look closely at the photos above, you'll notice the shoulder parts look slightly drooped in a lot of them — that's because they kept sagging on their own while I was shooting. (Of course, you can carefully push them up and lock them in place before shooting, but I only noticed after I'd already finished taking all the photos. -_-;)

That said... this kit is by no means perfect, but those absolutely fantastic leg frames and all its strengths do a great job of hiding the various flaws I mentioned above — to the point where you often don't even notice them. Funnily enough, that feeling itself is exactly what you get with the PG. The fact that it even replicates that experience... yeah, this kit really is going for that PG style through and through. ^^;;;

Anyway, as the flagship mobile suit of the Gundam universe, this is without a doubt the highest-quality 1/100 RX-78 currently out there. It has its share of flaws, but the jaw-dropping leg frames, excellent proportions, and great articulation more than make up for them. Compared to v1.0, it's in a completely different league. If you're torn between the two, v1.5 is the obvious choice — and if you've got the means, it's also fun to build v1.0 as a keepsake and display them side by side. ^^

CategoryRatingAnalysis
Seam Lines★★★☆The torso and arms are unchanged, but the legs — seam lines gone, smooth as can be.
Molding Color / Color Separation★★★★☆The molded colors look spot-on... but why did they go with stickers for the head antennae?
Proportions★★★★☆Thanks to those natural-looking legs, the proportions get a massive boost!
Articulation★★★★Leg articulation is pure PG-level. Arms are the same as before. -_-
Joint Strength★★★☆The lower body is much sturdier now. Arms slightly improved too. Waist is still meh.
Internal Frame★★★★The leg frames alone are incredible. Hatch opening is reinforced too.
Detail★★★★Overall, the restrained panel lining gives it a more refined look. The arms are still a letdown though.
Weapons★★★★★Beam Jabelin and Gundam Hammer added to the mix. Hard to find a kit with this kind of weapon variety.
Parts Count / Price★★★★308 parts total. Parts per ¥1,000: 102.7. A relatively generous lineup.
Uniqueness★★★★★This is THE main character's mobile suit! The most polished 1/100 RX-78 out there right now.
Dalong's Point : 84 pts.
