MG FA-010S

Full Armor ZZ Gundam

Kit Review

Straight build + Partial paint + Panel lining + Decals

After the MG ZZ came out, I quietly waited to see if a Full Armor ZZ would follow... and sure enough, it showed up just a few months later at the hefty price of ¥6000~ Just like the ZZ, this Full Armor ZZ is one of those kits that brings back fond memories of the old original release. Back in the day it only came out in the small 1/144 scale, but even then, the style of this thing — loaded up with all kinds of armor and lugging around a massive cannon — was pretty fresh for its time.

Full Armor ZZ can occasionally be shortened to FAZZ, but since that name is more commonly used to refer to the Sentinel version, I'll mostly be calling it "Full Armor" ZZ here, the nostalgic term. Also, the manual itself lists it as Full Armor ZZ rather than FAZZ, and the anime setting also uses the term Full Armor ZZ, so keep that in mind.

As you can see in the photos, Full Armor ZZ is a unit that relies on sheer bulk from the get-go. The ZZ's articulation was already hard to call great, and with all that armor covering it up, the range of motion has gotten even more restricted. So this is basically a kit you have no choice but to display in a standing pose. Articulation just isn't the point here. That said, the bulk is genuinely impressive~ It's heavy, thick, and has a real sense of weight and presence. The added Hyper Mega Cannon is also an impressive piece of detail work. The energy cable is reproduced quite precisely too, with individual covers fitted over what appears to be actual wire.

The MG ZZ already had over 500 parts, putting it close to PG territory — and then adding all those external armor parts on top of that pushes the Full Armor ZZ's part count to a whopping 700. That means the build time is no joke. It's going to take more than three times as long as a typical MG. Then again, that also means it's that much more intricate...

The ZZ used as the inner body isn't completely identical to the existing MG ZZ. The two red wing sections and side skirt parts that were on the MG ZZ are absent from the Full Armor ZZ, which means a full transformation is not possible. (This is genuinely one of the most repeatedly asked questions. -_-;) Well, it's not like anyone who buys the Full Armor ZZ is going to convert it into a ZZ anyway... but it still would've been nice if they'd made that option possible. Still, the joints on the inner MG ZZ are on the sturdy side, so even with all that armor hanging off it and the Hyper Mega Cannon slung over its shoulder, it doesn't topple over easily. As long as you get the feet planted properly, it stands up solid. That's a relief. ^^

Among all the armor pieces hanging on the outside, the chest and crotch armor have a somewhat iffy fit and tend to fall off, and the ones on the sides in particular pop off every time you try to move the legs — which gets pretty annoying. The additional armor on the arms and legs, on the other hand, fits well and doesn't come off easily.

Overall... I get a slightly less exciting feeling from this compared to the MG ZZ that serves as its base. Of course, back when I was a kid building the 1/144 Full Armor ZZ, I used to imagine how insane it would look in a massive 1/100 scale — and it's been realized in such a fantastic way. Even if it's essentially a standing model with almost no articulation, the sheer charisma of that bulk, packed solid from the inside out, is genuinely impressive.

But compared to the ZZ, which was colorful and vibrant with its wild color combination and perfect color separation, the Full Armor ZZ feels more subdued — the added armor covers up a lot of the body, leaving the color scheme feeling like a calm combination of blue and white. Because of that, the molded colors on the surfaces feel a bit plain. It's probably because the complex surfaces have been smoothed out and the colors simplified. The detail feels ever so slightly lacking because of this too, and without panel lining or at least some partial painting, the straight build looks even more flat. I wish they'd put a bit more fine detail into the external armor...

This is a well-known kit that has made many builders groan at the sheer pressure of 700 parts and the build time that comes with it — but spare a thought for the designers at Bandai who had to design all those parts. ^^; Considering the recent trend toward reducing part counts in kit design, this feels like a kit that probably couldn't have been made without the craftsman spirit of those early MG developers. Even now in 2005 as I update this review, developing a kit with this many parts — more than a PG — for just ¥6000 is no easy feat.

Anyway, it's definitely a landmark kit in its own right
(especially the part count ;;). If you've been wanting to spend a long time building, or you prefer
a kit with imposing bulk and presence, this is the ultimate item!

CategoryRatingAnalysis
Seam Lines★★★★☆Aside from the massive Hyper Mega Cannon,
there's barely any room for
seam lines to show.
Molding Color / Color Separation★★★★☆The black areas on the added verniers
look like they could use
a bit of hand painting.
Proportions★★★★★The sheer bulk and sense of weight are
simply the best!
Articulation★★★You might as well accept that it barely moves;
it's all about the bulk! That's somewhat forgivable.
Joint Strength★★★★★The whole body has a decent amount of stiffness. The grip strength is
weak, but you won't really need it.
Internal Frame★★★★Still completely absent, but the layered armor packed in from the inside
is multi-armor in its truest form.
Detail★★★★☆Everything we ever dreamed of from the Full Armor ZZ,
all in one. And yet, somehow, a slight feeling of emptiness...
Weapons / Accessories★★★★★Everything you need is here as expected. The main body itself is
already so packed full.
Parts Count / Price★★★★★700 parts total. Parts per ¥1,000: 116.7. A parts count that
surpasses even PG kits -_-;
Uniqueness★★★★★The very kit we've been dreaming of alongside ZZ.
Now made real in 1/100 scale.
Dalong's Point : 91 pts.
