Gouf Custom

Kit Review

Straight build + Partial paint + Panel lining + Decals

Following the Gouf, the MG Gouf Custom — piloted by the loyal Norris Packard from the 08th MS Team anime — has been released. Since it's a custom kit based on the Gouf, at first glance it might seem like it's just a simple color variant, but aside from the head and hands/feet, all of the exterior armor has been completely redesigned, making it feel like a genuinely new kit as a variation. Sure, the internal frame and articulation use the same structure, but with a different exterior it can't help but feel fresh. In particular, the Gouf Custom's light blue molded color has a subtle, matte-like quality that feels quite premium. It looks a lot more refined than the Gouf's stark blue.

The first thing that comes to mind with the Gouf Custom is that massive gatling shield. A triple-barrel gatling with a 6-barrel gatling shield stacked on top, mounted on the left arm — the sheer size and detail are pretty overwhelming. Each gatling barrel is assembled individually, giving it excellent depth, and with all the bits and pieces attached it has a really complex, intricate feel. The heat saber is also stored in the back of the shield. This one incredibly imposing and detailed gatling shield alone is enough to sell the kit.

Just like the Gouf, it does come with a heat saber and heat rod, but they feel a bit underwhelming compared to the Gouf's. The anchor-type heat rod made of a simple wire is a bit plain.. and the heat saber is just a single straightforward part rather than a soft flexible piece, so it's a bit bland too. But the gatling more than makes up for it, right? ^^

Since the basic skeleton is the same as the Gouf, the near full-body internal frame is a highlight, and the improved leg articulation is nice, but.. it still falls into the category of kits with loose joints... T_T The shoulders are at least a bit stiff, but the knees and legs are noticeably looser, so if you're not careful this kit will topple backwards. The gatling in particular is huge and heavy, and with the arm joints not being very stiff, it's hard to pull off a pose where it's firing the gatling. It gradually droops lower and lower until it ends up pointing at the floor;;

Looking at just the parts count, it seems like fewer than the Gouf.. but that's because the Gouf has that massive bead-stringing heat rod. In terms of actual volume, the Gouf Custom feels like it has way more going on. Of course, that's all thanks to the large gatling shield. The Gouf Custom is a kit that feels incredibly packed with content for its ¥3000 price tag.

In conclusion, it inherits both the strengths and weaknesses of the Gouf, but with a completely redesigned exterior. Above all, the sheer presence of that massive gatling — something you just don't see on other kits — is in a league of its own. If only the joint strength were tighter, this would be an absolute winner — that's the one thing that really lets it down.
