GM Ground Type

Kit Review

Straight build + Partial paint + Panel lining + Decals

The GM Ground Type is the third release in the 08th MS Team Ground Type series. Naturally, it reuses the GM Ground Type Gundam's internal skeleton and a good portion of the outer armor as-is. So for frame characteristics and articulation, MG GM Ground Type Gundam Reviewplease refer to that. That said, just like the Ez-8, the GM Ground Type differs from the GM Ground Type Gundam in quite a few areas. The face, chest section, backpack, crotch area, and knee area are all new designs, and the weapons in particular are quite different. The backpack has also been changed to a conventional MS-style design, completely different from the previous Ground Type series.

The GM Ground Type comes with a fantastic Sniper-spec long-range beam rifle and a shoulder-mounted missile launcher. However, with all these extra weapons added and the backpack design changed, the container (a.k.a. the "moving box") that was included with the GM Ground Type Gundam and Ez-8 has been left out. Essentially, you're getting the long-range beam rifle in place of the container. So the manual even says that if you really want the container loadout, just borrow one from the Ez-8 or GM Ground Type Gundam kit. (Which basically means buy all of them..)

The scope section of the Sniper-spec long-range beam rifle gets a thick, convex red semi-transparent sticker applied to it. The material is so chunky it's almost embarrassing to call it a sticker (see the runner shot for reference), but thanks to that, it catches the light beautifully and gives a super realistic feel — 200% immersion. To hold such a long weapon, there's an extra hand part included that you won't find in other Ground Type kits. It's designed to grip the long-range rifle with the wrist bent about 45 degrees, which makes the pose look much more natural. Also, the head's clear part is molded in green clear plastic. Nice!

Actually, if you paint this GM Ground Type in an olive drab style, it becomes a straight-up GM Sniper. Since the GM Sniper actually gets more screen time in the 08th MS Team anime, they could've just released it as a GM Sniper... but for whatever reason, it came out in standard GM colors. I half-expected them to release a GM Sniper version later with just the molded colors changed... but it seems like that never happened ^^;

The biggest point of controversy at the time of release was probably the orange molded color. It doesn't show up as much in photos, but in person it's almost fluorescent. It looks a bit translucent and lightweight — or rather, I wish they'd used a more matte, subdued plastic material instead. The fluorescent orange came out way too flashy. Personally I don't think it's that bad, but I've seen some people absolutely hate it ^^;

When the GM Ground Type first came out, I opened the box with a bit of a "here we go again with the reuse" feeling, but once I actually built it, I remember thinking "oh ho~ now this is something." The even more generous weapon loadout, the surprisingly fresh feel... with 354 parts it offers top-tier value for the price, so it takes a bit longer to build too. Among all the various GM kits out there, this one stands out in quality by a clear margin. Clean styling, weapons that don't just feel generous but actually overflow, and solid build quality — you could easily call this the best GM kit out there.

In the end, just like the previous Ground Type series, it's a high-quality kit with decent articulation, solid joint strength, a mechanical frame, and a generous weapon loadout. Though the tradition of wrists popping out easily is alive and well too.(-_-;) Setting aside the fluorescent orange molded color that some people might find revolting, this might just be the best kit in the already high-quality Ground Type lineup. It's relatively the least popular of the three Ground Type kits, but once you actually build it, you'll be surprised by the unexpectedly fresh feel and sheer volume. Truly the best bang for your buck.

The 08th MS Team Ground Type MGs all share the same base, yet each kit has a personality that goes well beyond being a simple variation. So even if you build all three together, each one gives you a distinctly different experience — it's a great series that way. If you're a fan of the 08th MS Team anime, I'd strongly recommend building all three of these alongside the superb Gouf Custom. Highly recommended~ ^^
