Zeta plus - Test color

Kit Review

Straight build + Panel lining + Decals

Hot on the heels of the MG Sentinel FAZZ! The Sentinel's Zeta Plus has been released.
Though instead of the gray Type C1 unit we all remember fondly, the Type A1 Amuro's personal Zeta plus - Test color came out first. Either way, a big welcome! ^^

The Zeta Plus is, as the name suggests,
a successor concept to the Zeta Gundam. It can transform into a Waverider in a similar style to the Zeta, but it's an improved, newer machine compared to the Zeta. Perhaps that's why it came out with an incredibly upgraded, top-tier level of quality compared to the rather disgraced MG Zeta Gundam.. T_T I'm genuinely moved.

The greatest thrill of the MG Zeta Plus is
without a doubt the "perfect transformation". The MG Zeta Gundam showed us one great example of a transformation system, but it was a kit where getting the Waverider to hold its shape was a real struggle — the shield, wings, and legs were all loose and wouldn't stay locked. The MG Zeta Plus follows nearly the same transformation approach as the MG Zeta, but completely fixes all those shortcomings. For starters, all the joints are stiff across the board, giving it excellent hold, and after transformation, various locking gimmicks kick in to keep everything perfectly in place. A lot of this borrows directly from the methods used on the PG Zeta, and the locking on the shield, wings, and leg connector plates is really superb.

The MG Zeta Plus's proportions in MS mode
are very slender, and accordingly, even after transformation it's much longer, slimmer, and more sleek compared to the MG Zeta. The combination of the refined orange and ivory molded colors is excellent, and the grip, legs, knees, feet, and arms are all stiff and hold their positions very well. The one weak point is that the crotch locking pin that secures the leg connector plate feels a little on the weak side.. It's far better than the MG Zeta, but if you move the legs around a bit too aggressively, it tends to pop out easily. As long as you're mindful of that when posing, the overall joint strength is top-notch!

The MG Zephyranthes' articulation is honestly jaw-dropping. Not only do the arms and legs fold completely, but the legs themselves can raise all the way up until the knees nearly touch the chest. This is made possible by the skirt-free leg design, which lets you pull off all kinds of demanding poses — lying flat, bowing, kneeling, sitting on the knees, you name it. That said, due to the transformation mechanics, the joints bend a lot forward and backward but don't spread much sideways, so when you actually try action poses, they end up looking a bit less dynamic than you'd expect.

Also, since the joint angles are tuned more toward "efficient transformation" than MS mode posing, standing it up in MS mode feels ever so slightly unnatural. The classic Katoki Hajime stance — legs spread in a V, standing in that relaxed, almost arrogant way — just doesn't come out well. Instead it ends up looking more like a stiff soldier standing rigidly at attention. Probably because the legs don't rotate or spread out enough. Still, those legs that fold up so outrageously are genuinely impressive~

Being a transforming kit, it's a bit of a shame that the inner frame is concentrated only in the legs, but when you consider how packed the transformation gimmicks are inside, it's something you can let slide. :-)

All in all, this is clearly an exceptionally well-executed MG kit, and a masterpiece that shows what truly perfect transformation looks like. The parts count for the price is top-tier too — open the box and you get that satisfying "wow, that's a lot" feeling. If the MG Zeta had come out at this level back in the day, it would've been an absolute mega-hit. The gap in time is a real shame. T_T
