MG MSN-02

Zeong

Kit Review

Straight build + Panel lining + Decals

The Zeong wasn't exactly a kit you'd expect to get an MG release easily, but here it is as a 1/100 scale MG. It's a big unit with no legs and not many areas where detail really stands out. There's a bit of risk in making it an MG, but it seems like the strong appeal of being "his" final mobile suit of the One Year War was enough to get it released.

About a year before this kit came out, the Zeong was also released as an HGUC, and it was pretty well received thanks to its solid detail and functionality. When news broke that an MG Zeong was coming, my first thought was — the HGUC already seemed to cover all the necessary features like the waist and neck gimmicks, so could the MG really offer anything beyond just being bigger? That thought did cross my mind.

But MG is MG — it's in a different league from HGUC. ^^ No matter how good the HGUC Zeong is, the MG Zeong is several steps above it.

First of all, just looking at the upper body — the massive frame that surpasses even a PG pairs nicely with the pretty solid stand to create a great display effect. The stand with its 5-step height adjustment and locking is excellent. Of course color separation should be perfect at this size — that's a given — and the joints are sturdy too. That said, the articulation of the body and arms is (no legs aside) just average.

The absolute highlight of the MG Zeong is definitely what's under the skirt! (^^;) The detail inside the skirt is so elaborate it'll make your head spin. The layered mechanical detail built up from so many parts is truly top-notch across all of Gunpla. Look closely and it almost gives off a Star Wars vibe too. Seriously, no amount of praise for the skirt interior detail is too much — it's the best of the best!! The internal frame throughout the body is well done too, and while the arm frame is quite good, the torso feels comparatively a bit bare.

Just like the HGUC, the MG Zeong also pulls off the Zeong's signature "give me back my legs~" pose (?) well, with the neck and waist bending backward. The unexpected articulation points unique to the MG are the upper body and the interior of the skirt. The chest opens up on both sides and the shoulders widen, allowing for more dynamic poses. With no legs, you need something like this to look at all dynamic ^^; Also, the verniers under the skirt that look like they'd be fixed in place actually offer quite a variety of movement. The two large front verniers use lever joints and ball joints to move across a fairly wide range, while the five rear verniers have their entire base plate extend out about 1cm, allowing the whole thruster nozzle direction to be rotated backward. The arm-launching gimmick is represented well enough with the stands and wires, but it's not exactly the most impressive-looking feature.

So this is a kit that faithfully recreates the "Zeong" beyond expectations in its own way — but the biggest drawback is probably that for the high price of ¥6,000, it somehow doesn't look like it costs that much on the outside. In terms of value for money, this is definitely not a kit for everyone. Unless you're a die-hard fan of "him" or really love the Zeong's design, it's hard to justify the price. You could buy two decent MGs for the same money. That said, it's clearly a kit that's packed with more on the inside than the outside suggests. So if you're really interested, the quality is there — no need to hesitate. ^^

Molding Color / Color Separation★★★★★Given the sheer size, it's nearly perfect.

Articulation★★★No legs..; The arms aren't great either — not a kit with particularly good articulation.
Joint Strength★★★★★Nothing you'd call loose.
Internal Frame★★★★☆Arm frame is great. Torso is a bit bare. Under the skirt is absolutely stunning~
