Following the Zeon version, the Zaku II F2 — which sparked a revolution in MG Zakus — has now arrived in EFSF colors. It's also a unit that appears in Gundam 0083.
Since the unit itself was originally a captured Zeon machine with just the colors changed, naturally the body structure and most of the exterior are identical to the Zeon version.
The differences are mainly the backpack and the forehead detail. So for a more detailed look at the kit's structure, please refer to the
MG Zaku F2 review for more details.
The desert color molded color of the EFSF F2 looks really nice. The subtle, even tone that doesn't feel too sandy puts it right up there with the F2 Zeon version as one of the best molded colors out there. The photos make it look a bit shiny due to the lighting, but in person the molded color is absolutely satisfying! ^^
The biggest difference from the Zeon version isn't the body — it's the included weapons. The missile pod and MMP90 machine gun from the Zeon version are gone, replaced by the Zaku's trademark Zaku machine gun (new type) and heat hawk. Back in the old MG Zaku days, most of the standard weapons (Zaku machine gun, heat hawk, bazooka — all three) were included in every Zaku kit, but with the F2 the weapons have been split between the Zeon and EFSF versions, and a lot of people aren't happy about that. In a way, it's probably a strategy to get you to buy both;;
The new-type Zaku machine gun that's been added has a noticeably more refined look compared to the original Zaku machine gun. The stock is thicker and the overall feel of the gun has changed. The heat hawk only gets a slight detail upgrade, but unlike the old MG Zaku, it now has a separate dedicated body mounting part — so that awkward peg on the side of the heat hawk is gone. (See photos)
The resin-quality open hand parts from the Zeon version are still included, and the EFSF version adds two more hands on top of that. The left hand is a plain fixed fist, and the right hand is a fixed grip shaped for holding a beam rifle. The detail is decent enough, but the back of the hand — which should be in the body's desert color — is just lazily done in plain gray.
Just like the Zeon version before it, the EFSF version is a great kit with excellent articulation, a nicely detailed frame, and reasonably solid joints. It's a typical color variant, sure, but the different weapons loadout and the very different color scheme give it its own appeal. A lot of people have probably been agonizing over whether to get the Zeon version or the desert version.. when in doubt, be sure to consult Professor Mulder. ( ^_^;;)
