S-Gundam Booster Unit Type

Kit Review

Straight build

After the MG S-Gundam and Ex-S Gundam were released in the early 2000s, most people expected a booster unit to follow at some point — but there was nothing but silence for a long while. Then, well over ten years later, the MG S-Gundam Booster Unit Type finally made its appearance as a Club G exclusive.

I'm a huge Gundam Sentinel fan personally, so even as a Club G exclusive, I was genuinely moved to see an MG-grade booster unit finally get released. The box matches the MG Ex-S in size — a massive, hefty exclusive packed with a generous amount of parts.

The overall package feels less like a limited release and more like a proper retail product. The manual in particular is done up in full retail style, which makes it seem like a general release was at least considered at some point. That said, it's never been as popular as the S-Gundam or Ex-S, and by the time this came out the hype had long since cooled down — so it looks like they quietly put it out as a limited release instead ^^;

The contents are pretty much what you'd expect: the basic idea is that the large boosters that were on the Ex-S's back go from two to four. On top of that, new hip joint and backpack parts are included to mount the additional boosters and two new propellant tanks, and there are also new parts that let you swap out the barrel section of the existing beam smart gun to configure it in the rapid-fire equipment spec.

The end result is a kit that stays faithful to the source material, and it's definitely quality enough to satisfy any Sentinel fan. By its nature it's not really a kit you'd put into all kinds of action poses — just building it and putting it on display is more than enough to make a strong impression. That said, if you lower the stand angle and open up the backpack fully, you can get a pretty striking charging pose out of it.

As the sheer volume of the kit suggests, it needs a lot of parts, so there's quite a bit of assembly work involved — but even so, for an MG kit that came out over ten years ago, it still delivers a really satisfying build experience. (And of course, true to its Club G exclusive pedigree, the amount of leftover parts is absolutely staggering..) Either way, if you're a Sentinel fan, this is one rare limited release you really can't afford to miss. :-)
