Char's Z'Gok

Kit Review

Straight build + Panel lining + Decals

"Variations can evolve too."

When the mass production Z'Gok came out, a Char's variation was something anyone could've seen coming. The only question was when. Since the blue mass production Z'Gok was already pretty good quality, I figured they'd just release it as a straight color variant... but surprisingly, even in a short span of time, it came out as an evolved variation.

First off, 21 parts were added while the price stayed the same. Here are the changes compared to the mass production version:

1. Major joint overhaul.
The internal connector parts and polycaps inside the segment joints have all been changed, and on top of that, two strands of soft rubber tendons have been added inside each joint. The segment joints on the original mass production Z'Gok were a bit loose — not firmly fixed — so when you held the body and shook it, the limbs had a slight (not terrible, but noticeable) wobble to them. Char's Z'Gok addresses this by making the internal joints longer and the connecting polycaps longer and deeper, locking the joints in much more tightly. No more wobbling, and they don't pop out easily either — it's a solid, sturdy joint now.

On top of that, the revised segment structure makes extending and retracting much easier — you can stretch each segment in and out. So if you leave the segments extended, it looks taller and longer-armed than the mass production Z'Gok. The two added soft rubber tendons are also clearly visible between the segments, which adds even more detail. Overall, the joints have been massively improved, bringing the overall quality up another notch.

2. 4-finger claws added.
The 4-finger claws that appear in the movie have been included so you can recreate that look. It's not like both the 3-finger and 4-finger versions can be displayed at the same time — you pick one and build it that way. (Meaning only one set of each claw type is included.)

3. Decals added.
A large number of decals have been added for the head cover and other areas. They're not exactly easy to apply though.

4. Upper body frame color sync!
On the mass production version, the upper body internal frame color came out in the joint segment color rather than the frame color, which looked a bit out of place. (reference photo) Apparently quite a few people complained about this, because on Char's Z'Gok, the upper body frame molded color has been changed to match the rest of the frame consistently.

The original mass production Z'Gok was already a pretty impressive kit, and Char's Z'Gok carries that forward — the internal frame, detail, and proportions are all excellent. The Z'Gok series in particular is really easy to review since the outer armor pops off so effortlessly. ^^;

For a variation released within just six months, this is an unusual case where quite a lot has been upgraded — it feels fresh and special even for those who've already built the mass production version. Compared to the mass production kit, Char's Z'Gok is clearly the better quality build, but paired with the Gogg, having all three as a seafood trio set makes it even better. All three boast top-tier quality. I guess since Japan is an island nation, they have a thing for seafood... (wait, that's not what I was going to say;;)

Anyway, this was a variation I wasn't expecting much from, but it turned out to be surprisingly generous — way more upgraded than expected. I guess that's what you get when it's "his" personal unit? ^^

Internal Frame★★★★★So good it's almost surprising for a Z'Gok.
Detail★★★★★Not just the exterior — the frame detail is killer too.

Parts Count / Price★★★★201 parts total. Parts per ¥1000: 67. That's 21 more parts for the same price.
