MG RX-78-2

Gundam ver.O.Y.W. : Chrom Plating Ver.

Kit Review

Straight build

As one of the ClubMG limited editions of 2010, the ver. One Year War Gundam — that is, the MG Gundam Ver. O.Y.W. 0079 — was released in a unique chrome plating finish. When you think of a typical plated or plated version, you'd usually picture a shiny, high-gloss coating, but the chrome plating here is an elegant silver finish with a subtle semi-gloss feel.

At first glance it looks similar to the fine semi-gloss coating of the Extra Finish version, but when you put them side by side, this one has a noticeably weightier and deeper color tone. The finish also has a bit more depth to the sheen, so it comes across as quite a premium-looking coating.

Also, with most plated kits, each color area gets its own individual colored coating — but this chrome plating version of the MG Gundam Ver. O.Y.W. 0079 has the entire exterior covered in a single uniform chrome color. So at first glance you might wonder if it's a die-cast version, and when you pick it up it somehow feels like it should be incredibly heavy.

The overall structure lives up to the MG Gundam Ver. O.Y.W. 0079's reputation and is very solid — it offers plenty of joint strength along with articulation that's in a completely different league from the 1.0. On top of that, the MG Gundam Ver. O.Y.W. 0079's distinctive intricate panel lines naturally show up like bright panel lining effects once the chrome plating is applied, so even as a straight build it already looks like it has a ton of detail going on.

As a uniquely striking all-over metallic color plated kit, this looks like a truly excellent limited edition both in terms of build quality and overall appearance. There's nothing to complain about in terms of rarity or quality, and it makes me wish a coating kit with this kind of die-cast feel would get an official domestic release as a special edition too. :-)
