Gouf ver. O.Y.W 0079 (PS2 soft)

Kit Review

Straight build + panel lining + stickers & decals

The second of the four O.Y.W. Zeon units is none other than the Gouf. Just like the Zaku, this is a kit that simply swaps out the molded colors while reusing the exact same molds. For a more detailed review, check out the MG Gouf reviewfor reference. As you can see, the molded color has been changed to a pastel tone with a heavy, matte feel, and it's definitely more subdued and better-looking than the slightly cheap-looking bright blue of the original. That said, the backpack and heat rod have ended up in something close to a bright sandy color, which does feel a little out of place.

Just like the Zaku, the original Gouf was known for having surprisingly loose joints relative to its overall quality. That's probably why, like the Zaku and Gelgoog, the polycap count was revised partway through. Compared to the original Gouf, the joints throughout the body are noticeably stiffer. The connection between the legs and the torso in particular has been significantly improved.

That said, the loose double-joint knees — widely considered the Gouf's biggest weak point — haven't been fixed. To be precise, the Gouf's double-joint knees use a rather unusual bolt-tightening mechanism, so polycap improvements don't really apply here. In the end, your only options are to tighten the bolt as firmly as possible, or dab a little super glue on before tightening to stiffen it up. Even then... if you bend the knees hard repeatedly, they'll loosen up again. It's honestly hard to understand why they went with a bolt for the knees in the first place — a proper polycap would've been far more durable. -_-; Anyway, it's probably best for your sanity to tighten the bolt as tight as it'll go and just leave the knees alone.. Everything except the knees is great, though.

One more thing — the original Gouf included a figure of Ramba Ral, but the O.Y.W. version quietly drops it altogether. -_- Sneaking out a figure that's worth at least 200–300 yen (going by Bandai's price-hike track record up to now) is a bit... it would've been nice if they'd thrown something in instead. T_T

The overall structure of the Gouf looks similar in style to the Zaku on the surface, but the quality difference is quite significant. The Gouf comes out ahead in pretty much every way — frame, articulation, joint structure, proportions, you name it. Which is probably why the saying exists:

"It's not like the Zaku. It's nothing like the Zaku..."

Personally, out of the four O.Y.W. Zeon units, I feel like this one has the most unique and striking molded color — but since it's such a departure from the original Gouf's look, opinions are bound to be divided. The original Gouf was faithful to the design colors, but it always had that slightly garish quality that blue tends to bring. This O.Y.W. version, on the other hand, definitely gives off a sharper, more dignified vibe. And on top of that, with the joints noticeably reinforced as an added bonus, this feels like a kit that's well worth a strong recommendation for anyone who's never built a Gouf before. ^^

CategoryRatingAnalysis
Seam Lines★★★★Seam line consideration in various places, including solid slide-molded parts.
Molding Color / Color Separation★★★★★Perfect color separation. Stable, well-balanced pastel tones.
Proportions★★★★★The Gouf's menacing atmosphere comes through really well.
Articulation★★★☆Much better than the Zaku. Flexible ankle joints. Poses hold up pretty well.
Joint Strength★★★★☆Polycap reinforcement — feels sturdier. The screw joint in the knee is loose and needs some attention.
Internal Frame★★★★☆Frame in the head, torso, forearms, and entire legs.
Detail★★★★☆Good detail. Especially noticeable that quite a bit of care went into the frame.
Weapons / Accessories★★☆Just the heat rod and heat saber, but both are pretty well done. Figure is missing though;;
Parts Count / Price★★★★★343 parts total. Parts per ¥1,000: 122.5. Pretty generous.
Uniqueness★★★☆It's a molded color rehash, but with the reinforced joints it does come across as a slight improvement.
Dalong's Point : 85 pts.
