Destiny Gundam ~ Extreme Blast mode

Kit Review

Straight build
+ panel lining + decals

Just like the MG Strike Freedom Gundam, the Destiny Gundam was released simultaneously in both a standard version and a special version. The special version of the Destiny is called "Extreme Blast Mode," and comes with the following changes.

1. The joint parts have been changed to metallic Extra Finish-style plating.
2. Wings of Light that can be attached to the wings are included.
3. Weapon effect parts added — energy blast hands, and 2 beam weapon firing support stands.
4. Clear figures of Shinn and Kira added.

Since the basic structure is the same as the standard version, for more detailed information on the kit's construction, please refer to the  MG Destiny Gundam standard version reviewfor reference.

The joints are plated just like the Strike Freedom, but unlike the Strike Freedom's gold finish, this one has a heavier semi-gloss metallic coating. The quality and feel of the plating itself is quite nice, but once you've finished building it, it doesn't really stand out all that much. -_-; The two added figures aren't much of a selling point, but they do look pretty since they're clear. ^^; The weapon effect parts are a reasonably fun option.

Regardless of the other extras, the biggest selling point of the Destiny special version is definitely the Wings of Light. Honestly, they could've just included these in the standard version and charged a little more for it.. making a whole separate special edition feels like a marketing move, but what can you do. ^_^)r

The Wings of Light have wrinkles sculpted into them, giving them a decent sense of depth, and the color gradation — however they managed it — is layered really nicely across multiple stages. They also have a kind of rainbow coating, so when you shine a light on them just right, the surface scatters light in rainbow colors from different angles, like a chameleon. It's almost like looking at a prism. And because of that rainbow diffusion, hit it with the right lighting and it's absolutely spectacular. @_@

It's not easy to capture the rainbow color reflections in photos, but if you play around with your lighting, you can display it in a way that looks far more impressive. Sure, the size is quite large so finding display space is a challenge, and the attachment to the wing section is a bit iffy so there's a risk of it falling off — but once it's on, it looks gorgeous. ^^

And just like with the Strike Freedom special version, the plating on the joints reduces the play in them, making the joint strength a bit more solid. In other words, they're stiffer and less prone to flopping over~ This is one of the hidden benefits of the plating.

As with any special version like this, if you've got the budget, I'd naturally recommend going for the special version even at ¥2200 more. Especially if you've got your eye on the Wings of Light — there's really no choice to make. As for which of the two gives you better value for money, that's honestly a tough call to make. Get enough info from the reviews and decide for yourself! ^^ (Yay, dodging responsibility~)
